Colorado
Composer has a Pittsburgh Past!
“Secret Language of Snow,”
a composition by 1975 Baldwin High School graduate,
Kirk Vogel, was performed at the latest Family Concert
in Heinz Hall by the Pittsburgh Symphony and Pittsburgh
Flute Academy Flute Choirs. Kirk is now living,
teaching, and composing in Greeley, Colorado.
“Secret Language of Snow”
was inspired by the fact that native Inuit have
26 words that describe snow. Two movements of
five were played in the concert, “Annui”
(falling snow) and “Siqoq” (swirling
snow above ridge tops). Some of Kirk’s additional
compositions are “Kokopelli” (for
orchestra) which tells about the legend of Kokopelli,
the Anasazi Indian hunchback flute player. “Kokopelli”
has been performed by the Denver, Boulder, and
Albuquerque Youth Symphonies. For Band and Marching
Band, he has composed “Our Flag Was Still
There,” done as a tribute after 9/11. He
has also created “Gates of Hodore,”
“Candle Dragon,” “Perseids,”
and “Enter the Phoenix.”
