One
Book, One Community
Allegheny
County Library Association is promoting the One
Book, OneCommunity program, which began in Seattle
in1998. The purpose, is not only to promote reading,
but also the sharing of a common experience in
the belief that shared experiences bring people
together. Everyone in Allegheny County is being
encouraged to read, To Kill A Mockingbird, during
the months of January through March. The selection
of this book is especially significant, because
it is about the evil of divisions within a community.
Baldwin Borough Library decided to invite two
segments of the community, who are some times
at odds, teens and adults, to come together and
share the experience of reading and discussing
this book. Baldwin Borough librarian Joyce Chiappetta
and Baldwin High School teacher Brigetta Hannah
arranged for the students to meet with the adult
members of the library's existing book discussion
groups. Small groups of students were paired
with adults and assigned a series of questions
to discuss during lunch. After viewing the trial
scene of the movie, the entire group discussed
some of the morecontroversial questions.

Harrison
Middle School 8th Grade Physics Lab
Harrison
Middle School 8C students used the ramp
in the auditorium to collect data for a
physics velocity lab. Groups of three to
four students had a car that they sent
down the ramp. They calculated the average
velocity at two different distances. After
collecting the data, the students performed
data analysis and made Time Vs Distance
graphs.

HMS
- Team 7B Indirectly Measures Different
Objects
Students
on team 7B were asked to find the lengths or
heights of different objects at Harrison Middle
School, without measuring them directly. Some
of the objects that they were to find the length
or heights included the height of the clock in
the hallway and the length of the classroom door.
Students found the lengths or heights of the
objects, by implementing concepts of proportionality
and similar figures that had been previously
developed through lessons in the classroom. The
students had a great time working in small groups
to gather the data needed to complete their calculations.
The classes finished the activity by comparing
their calculations and conclusions with the actual
lengths and heights of the objects.

Whitehall
Elementary Egg Drop
Working
in groups of two or three, Mr. Fisher's fourth
grade students designed parachutes that would
drop an egg safely from a second floor classroom
window to the sidewalk below at Whitehall Elementary.
The students applied their science lesson knowledge
of air resistance to conduct the experiment.
Each
group was supplied with a four-inch piece of
tape, one piece of construction paper, one piece
of tissue paper, four cotton balls, four feet
of string, and one egg. In past years, about
half of the dropped eggs cracked. This year,
not one egg broke! As a culminating activity,
each student wrote a paragraph describing why
his/her parachute design was a success.
