Mining
at Paynter
Paynter
Elementary third grade students completed their
Science module on Rocks and Minerals with a visit
from Mrs. Donna Gumbel from Joy Mining Company.
Mrs. Gumbel showed the students a variety of
minerals and the products that they have in them.
The students learned that coal is used to make
electricity and there is galena in a battery.
She brought to the presentation a mining outfit
and had several children try on the big, steel-toed
shoes, jumpsuit, harness, earmuffs, and miners
hat.

Student-To-Student
Tobacco Awareness Program
This
is the fourth year for The Student-To-Student
Tobacco Awareness Program. The program was developed
as a prevention program to help educate young
children about the dangers of smoking. If adolescents
can be kept tobacco-free, most will remain tobacco
free for the rest of their lives. The program
targets 4th graders in an effort to reach students
before they are introduced to smoking. Four high
school seniors, Jocelyn Graff, Matt Kuntz, Brian
Suchy, and Kristine Van Wert were selected to
be trained and then to present the material to
the 4th graders. The seniors worked closely with
Dr. Giovanazzi, school social worker at Baldwin
High School, on preparing and presenting the
information. The seniors began meeting with Dr.
Giovanazzi in March and have practiced over time
in order to be ready to go into the classrooms
in late April and May. The Program consists of
2 sessions.

Second
Grade Healthy Snacks - Paynter
I'm
sure every Mom has heard this question at least
once a day from her children. "Mom, I'm
hungry, what can I eat for a snack?" Well,
Ms. Blazewick's second grade class is working
on giving us some suggestions to answer this
question. The students are putting together a
booklet that will contain healthy snack recipes,
most of which are surely tried and true recipes.
For example, Amber Pearsol's recipe is called
Ocean Bottom Crackers!
Materials:
round
snack crackers
fish-shaped
crackers
cream
cheese
blue
food coloring
spoon
or butter knife
Procedures:
1.
Mix a drop or two of blue food coloring
into softened cream cheese.
2.
Spread cream cheese on round crackers (to
make "ocean").
3.
Place fish-shaped crackers on top of the
cream cheese.
While
talking about snacks, the students also participated
in building a three dimensional food pryamid.
The children were divided into food groups represented
on the pyramid. Each group was assigned to cut
and paste the appropriate foods for their particular
food group.
To
extend the lesson on the food pyramid, each
child created their own school lunch using
at least one food from each food group. Kayleigh
Niccolia's new lunch menu consists of:
Tuna Sandwich, Celery, Orange,Cookie and Milk...mmmm... sounds
good!

McAnnulty's
McMay Day
McMay
Day is a fun, educational day based on a theme
chosen by McAnnulty teachers. PTA funds the crafts,
speakers, demonstrations, and food. This year's
theme was McPittsburgh. The students enjoyed
games, ethnic foods from the McAnnulty "strip
district", an interactive program presented
by Gemini Theater, and a Pittsburgh History in
Song program presented by Just Ducky Tours.
