The
Baldwin-Whitehall School District has joined a
statewide public outreach campaign designed to promote
the accomplishments, accountability and value of
Pennsylvania's public schools.
Into
the Desert - Paynter
INTO
the DESERT went Mrs. Smith's class at Paynter
Elementary while they studied the Habitat
Module in Science. They learned how plants
and animals have to adapt to the severe changes
in the temperatures in the desert. The students
combined their Social Studies curriculum along
with the Science curriculum and have learned
about the Indians that inhabited the southwestern
desert of the U.S. Did you know that there
is a desert in Alaska? Deserts are determined
by the amount of rainfall it gets each year.
The class also learned how much rainfall and
snowfall our area gets and how much a rainforest
gets.

Generosity
Tree - Whitehall
The
character word for the month of December at
Whitehall Elementary was Generosity. Students
of Miss Plichta, Mrs. Geiger, Mr. Pearson
and Miss Gelzheiser class decided to show
their generosity by creating an ornament for
a generosity tree. The ornaments told of a
way in which the students planned to show
their generosity. Some students helped other
teachers in the mornings. Others brought in
a toy to donate for the toy drive, and some
listed ways they would give of their time
to help out at home with chores or decorating
for Christmas, help a sibling with homework,
or even make breakfast for his or her parent
on Christmas morning. Many of the students
have been generous in giving of their time
not for just one occasion, but rather for
a month or two. They are very proud of this
project.

December Happygrams
The character word
for the month of December was - GENEROSITY. When
thinking of the word generosity, we usually think
about giving money. However, there are many gifts
that can be given that don’t cost any money.
Parents appreciate when their children help around
the house without being asked. It may be surprising
as to how good one feels when generous with time
and attention. Generosity can be displayed by
helping a friend with homework, by helping elderly
relatives or neighbors, and by helping teachers
at school. All gifts, great and small, are appreciated
when given with a cheerful heart. Many Whitehall
Elementary students were recognized with a Happy
Gram for being generous during the month of December.

Anything
Goes Rehearsal Photos-1/17/04
The first all-day Saturday rehearsal for the
Spring musical, Anything Goes, took place
on January 17. The auditorium was a busy place
with set building, costume measuring, vocals,
directing and scene acting in preparation
for opening night on March 24.
Whitehall Elementary
students in Mrs. DeMarco’s third grade class
recently studied the Indian cultures of North
America, especially the Anasazi of the Southwest
region. Since the Anasazi lived in a desert area,
each student wrote a speech telling the people
of their clan to be careful with their use of
water. They delivered their speeches while standing
in front of a painting they made of a cliff dwelling
built inside a Mesa.

Heimlich
Maneuver- Whitehall
Whitehall
Elementary third grade teacher, Mrs. Janet
Finet went beyond just discussing the Weekly
Reader with her class. The students finished
reviewing the lessons in the Weekly Reader
on the Heimlich maneuver, when student Michael
McCormick indicated to Mrs. Finet that he
had caught something in his throat and could
not breath. Mrs. Finet performed the maneuver
several times with more pressure to each thrust.
Finally, the cap plug from Michael's pen popped
out of his throat.

Overlook
Green Resident Partner Program - HMS
Students in Ms.
Beverly Owen's class at Harrison Middle School
visit with their Overlook Green resident partners
once a month. They write to one another in-between
visits to practice their writing skills and to
say "hi" to their friends. During visits,
the residents at Overlook create an activity for
all to enjoy and then the partners spend time
talking and sharing their experiences since their
last visit. The students and residents look forward
to this community service learning activity.

Teen Center - HMS
The Teen Center
continues to be a popular attraction for the students,
staff, and parents of J.E. Harrison Middle School.
Students are able to engage in activities including
a dance, bingo, movie, basketball, and table games
that include ping-pong, pool, foosball and air
hockey. The children especially enjoyed receiving
a tattoo from the airbrush artist and running
in the Adrenaline Rush and Penalty Kick Shootout
inflatable games in the gymnasium.
Each month the Teen
Center has averaged nearly 700 students and 100
parent/teacher volunteers. Now in the fourth year
of existence, the Teen Center has maintained a high
level of popularity as the "place to be"
on a Friday night.
