The
Baldwin-Whitehall School District has joined a
statewide public outreach campaign designed to promote
the accomplishments, accountability and value of
Pennsylvania's public schools.
Rhythmic
Cultures - Whitehall
Whitehall Elementary
students enjoyed the performance of Rhythmic Cultures,
a performing arts troupe. The program, sponsored
by Whitehall PTA, entertained the students with
unique music and musical instruments from various
cultures. Interesting facts were presented about
African, Cajun and Appalachian music and students
volunteered to perform using the variety of musical
instruments.

- Differentiated Learning
The use of differentiated
instruction by Ms. Blazewick's second grade students
at Paynter Elementary reinforced the children's
learning in various activities throughout the
year. From creating fossils to spelling and math
games, the students enjoyed gaining knowledge
in many areas with lots of fun and laughs along
the way. The outstanding efforts of parent volunteers
helped to make the center activities a great success.

Fractured
Fairy Tales- Paynter
Third grade students
in Ms. Wolf's class at Paynter Elementary performed
three fractured fairy tales on April 28th. Family,
friends, and schoolmates were entertained by the
crazy going-ons in Rafunzel, Little Late Riding
Hood, and The Emperor's New Hair. The students
not only memorized their lines, they also painted
the sets, operated the curtains, and moved all
the sets on stage.

Katie Wallander, Lauren Watson, and Joe Yarsky.
Thirty-seven students
from Baldwin High School are anxiously waiting for
school to be out, so they can broaden their horizons
by participating in a ten-day tour of France and
Spain this summer. French and Spanish teachers,
Mr. Mike Damon, Mrs. Chris Gedid, Mrs. Sue Frye
and Mrs. Leslie Leopold are working with Cultural
Heritage Alliance Educational Tours to provide this
opportunity to their students. Highlights of the
tour include Paris, the Loire Valley and its châteaux,
Toulouse, Carcassonne, Madrid, Toledo, Barcelona
and Montserrat.

design for the spring concert programs. Teachers

Crayfish
At
Whitehall Elementary, Mrs. DeMarco's third
grade students had the opportunity to learn
about crayfish. The students enjoyed having
crayfish in their classroom. After the lesson,
a few students adopted the crayfish to take
home and then wrote about their new pets.

"High
School Starts NOW!!!"
Baldwin
High School junior, Matt Richardson, presented
his program, "High School Starts NOW!!!
to Ms Engel's seventh grade health classes
at Harrison Middle School. Matt designed this
motivational program to encourage younger
students to be proud to be an individualist,
to be involved in their school and community,
to find their passion and "go for it',
and to remind the students that the choices
that they make today sets the road for their
futures. He also discussed harassment, responsibility,
kindness, and bullying. Included in his many
involvements and accomplishments,
Matt is a member of National Honor Society, a CCD
teacher for St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin
Church, a volleyball coach for the St. Gabriel's
Boys and Girls team, a silver medal winner in the
National Latin Exam, a student peer tutor for a
Special Education class at Baldwin High School,
and vice-president of Student Forum.

Lincoln Visits McAnnulty
Abraham Lincoln,
the sixteenth president of The United States visited
McAnnulty Elementary this year. He told the students
what it was like back in his day and the things
that he did for all Americans.

That Tell Why - McAnnulty

at McAnnulty. Tim Hartman is always funny and
informative and involves his audience in his program.

to Author Eric Carle - McAnnulty
Students in second
grade at McAnnulty Elementary salute the author
Eric Carle and his children's books. The students
went on a field trip to see a presentation on
his books and upon their return they enjoyed hearing
his stories and completing projects.

100th
Day of School - McAnnulty
100 Day is celebrated
at McAnnulty. Hundred Day is celebrated from the
moment the students enter through the balloon
archway into school. Students dress in costumes
that remind us of one hundred, create projects,
and take part in activities.

Peer Mediation
Students from McAnnulty's
second grade were taught Peer Mediation techniques
to help themselves and other students. Peer Mediation
is a proven conflict resolution program and a
voluntary peaceful resolution of disputes in which
neutral third parties act as mediators. It is
students helping students. The teachers taught
the students how it was done and then they did
a mock mediation. Everyone celebrated after two
days of hard work and fun.

- Bridge Poems - HMS
PAGE (Pennsylvania Association
for Gifted Education) sponsored a state-wide "CREATIVE
CHALLENGE" for students in grades three through
eight for the annual state conference which was
held in Pittsburgh this year. The theme for this
year's conference was Connecting the Pieces: Building
the Bridges. In keeping with the theme, the contest
required students to "take us from the real
world to dreamland by building a bridge that symbolizes
one of your most fantastic wishes and type a poem
that explains the significance of the bridge."
The
Baldwin High School Future Business Leaders
of America (FBLA) Chapter hosted, in conjunction
with with Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall Chamber
of Commerce, the annual Discover Your Future
in Business Luncheon. During this luncheon,
Chamber of Commerce members volunteer their
time to have lunch and round table discussions
with FBLA members. During these sessions,
students ask questions and have business related
discussions with local businesspeople from
many different career paths. This year, seven
members of the
Chamber offered their
time to come and speak with our students. Career
paths included entrepreneurial ventures, accounting,
banking, law, public service, sports related fields,
and mortgage loans. Pictured are Mr. John Schmotzer
of Metropolitan Windows, Mr. Dan Koett of the Greater
Pittsburgh YMCA, and Mr. Dan Simoni of Price Waterhouse
Coopers. Student feedback was extremely positive
for this educational event.

McDisney
Day - McAnnulty
Each year, McAnnulty
Elementary looks forward to its annual McMay Day.
This day in May is set aside for educational and
fun activities for the entire school. Teachers,
McAnnulty PTA and other parent volunteers help
to make this day a success. This year's theme
was McDisney Day. The day began with the children
being greeted by characters from the Magic Kingdom.
After that came the band. The Baldwin High School
Marching Band came and played a medley of Disney
hits. They then led the school in a parade around
the parking lot. Other activities included a presentation
from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, crafts,
and snack foods. Radio Disney was on hand for
Disney trivia and dance games.

Olympics-Whitehall
On
Saturday, May 15, 2004, the Baldwin-Whitehall
School District hosted the Special Olympics
Summer Games for Allegheny County. Seven students
competed from Whitehall Elementary in a variety
of events earning several gold, silver and
bronze medals.

Olympics
Rain did not dampen
the excitement and enthusiasm for the annual Special
Olympics Allegheny County Summer Games held on May
14th and 15th at Baldwin High School. The athletes
trained hard to prepare for the competition and
many Baldwin-Whitehall students and employees volunteered
their time to ensure the success of the games.
