statewide public outreach campaign designed to promote
the accomplishments, accountability and value of
Pennsylvania's public schools.

Improvised Gym Day
Harrison Middle School
physical education class students took advantage
of the 70 degree weather and blue skies on one
of the last days of October. The beautiful fall
day was perfect for an "Improvised Gym Day".
The teachers led the students outside and into
the neighborhood as they jogged, power walked,
and did jumping jacks.

Kindergarten Visit Oakleaf Assisted Living Facility
On Halloween, there
were no tricks and only smiling faces at Oakleaf
Assisted Living Facility in Baldwin. Paynter kindergarten
students of Mrs. Mervos and Mrs. Corrigan sang
Halloween songs, paraded in their costumes and
read stories to the delight of the residents.

Together at Paynter"
Mrs. Noel and Mrs.

Fall scarecrows by "working together".
Second grade is learning how groups can work together
as part of the Social Studies curriculum.

Grade Library Breakfast
Whitehall Elementary
Library Breakfast Days finished with the fifth
grade. On their given day, each grade level had
the opportunity to arrive to school early with
a parent or grandparent and enjoy juice, donuts
and the sharing of reading a good book. Everyone
attending agreed that it is a great way to begin
the day.

Rails To Trails Benches/Tables
Students from Harrison
Middle School and Baldwin High School created
seating areas along the Three Rivers Heritage
Trail adjacent to Carson Street between the Hot
Metal Bridge and the Glenwood Bridge on Pittsburgh's
South Side. The seating areas consist of benches
and picnic tables. A gazebo will be added in the
Spring of 2004. Teachers planned the projects
and the students worked directly with them to
assemble the items at Harrison and Baldwin High
School. At the trail site, Harrison teachers Mr.
Saternos and Mr. Clay and the students prepared
the areas for installantion and anchoring. The
Baldwin Borough Public Works Department provided
the necessary digging tools and materials.

Red
Ribbon Week Light Up Night
The 6th - 8th grade
Club PRIDE members and the club sponsor Ms. Engel
kicked-off Red Ribbon Week activities at Harrison
Middle School with their Annual Light Up Night.
Club PRIDE members entered the auditorium with
a silent candle march followed by Whitehall Mayor
Jim Nowalk reading his proclamation designating
the week of October 26 as Red Ribbon Week at Harrison
Middle School. The students then performed skits,
songs, and dances showing the dangers of drug
use.

Fiddler
On The Roof - HMS
Ms. Olszewski's music
classes at Harrison Middle School have the opportunity
to perform in the musical, "Fiddler on the
Roof". The students design their own props,
sets, and costumes and then present an abbreviated
version of the show on the school stage. The scenes
include "To Life" and "Tevye's
Dream".

Safety Program- Whitehall
The Baldwin-Whitehall
Safety Bus completed it's journey to each of the
district's elementary schools by stopping at Whitehall
Elementary. In recognition of National School
Bus Safety Week, a district bus driver provided
bus safety instructions to the students. One classroom
at a time, the students entered the safety bus
to learn about the rules while riding the bus
and the correct way to get on and off the bus,
even in an emergency.

Fourth Grade Update
The fourth grade
class of Mr. Kraus at Paynter Elementary enjoy
all their class subjects this school year. The
students continue to cover the basics by creating
a set of multiplication flash cards for each student.
Each week, they have many opportunities to sharpen
their math skills, which makes the flash cards
mighty handy.

- "Candy Bar" Math
Paynter fourth grade
class of Mrs. Jeffers had the opportunity to practice
measurement with a “Candy Bar” math
activity. The children measured length, width,
and height of several candy bars. They also had
to find the perimeter and area of each. Finally,
they wrote some very interesting jingles to try
to persuade others to buy their candy. The students
enjoyed this activity; however, their favorite
part was the taste test.

Band TOB Chapter 8 Champions
The Baldwin Highlander
Marching Band completed their competition Tournament
of Band season as Chapter 8 Champion. With their
championship performance, the band also earned
Best Marching, Best Music, Best General Effect,
Best Brass, Best Woodwinds, and Best Auxiliary.
The band is under the direction of Mr. Gary McKeever,
Drum Major Nick Andes and Field Director Matt
Meyer. The band is scheduled to march in the Caste
Village Christmas parade at 5:45 p.m. on November
29 and are tentatively scheduled to perform at
the Steeler vs. San Diego game on December 21.

3rd Grade Art Class
Whitehall third grade
students in Mrs. Snee's art class have been expressing
their creativity. Their latest project makes use
of water color paints and color pencils to help
create an underwater scene. In addition to color
blending, students are learning how multiple sizes
and overlapping can be used to illustrate spacial
perspective.

WTAE television news highlighted the
Baldwin-Whitehall bus safety monitor
system that is installed on each of
the district's buses. WTAE anchor Ellen
Gamble reported on this system that
safeguards against students being left
behind on a school bus.

Storyteller
- Whitehall
"Native American
Princess Sparkling Water" aka as storyteller
Mrs. Kim Adley shared information and stories
with Mrs. Milcarek's and Mrs. Larson's fourth
grade classes at Whitehall Elementary. Princess
Sparkling Water demonstrated and discussed authentic
Native American tools, musical instruments, and
toys with the students.

"Show a Positive Attitude"
During the month
of November, Paynter students and teachers will
focus on a new theme, "SHOW A POSITIVE ATTITUDE".
With this theme, students are also learning about
the attribute responsibility. Through morning
news announcements, story time with the principals,
and by watching this month's video, students learn
about how to demonstrate these ideas. Class discussion
follows the activities to assist students to learn
how to demonstrate these positive qualities through
their behavior and good choices.

Leadership Presents
After school on November
3, 2003, Harrison Middle School hosted its third
annual Autumn Bowl. This Harrison Leadership project,
designed to promote school spirit, featured a Powder-Puff
Football Game with seventh grade girls competing
against eighth grade girls, as well as other entertainments.
