statewide public outreach campaign designed to promote
the accomplishments, accountability and value of
Pennsylvania's public schools.

Baldwin Highlander Marching Band Update
The Baldwin Highlander Marching Band has been busy performing at the Friday night football half-time shows and on numerous Saturdays for Tournament of Band competitions. The band's show consists of the theme from the opera, "Pagliaci" and Bacchanal from the opera "Sampson and Delilah". Despite very unfavorable field conditions of rain and mud, the band performed at the September 27 Steel Valley competition and earned a score of 80.4. They then traveled to the turf-field at West Mifflin High School stadium and performed at a music festival. The mud on their uniforms, shoes, and flags did not take away from an outstanding performance.

Pen Pals - Whitehall

It's a small world! Mrs. Milcarek's fourth grade class at Whitehall Elementary wanted to practice their letter writing skills with pen pals. After a website search for elementary schools with the name of Whitehall, their pen pals were found. Fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Benson at Whitehall Elementary, in South Carolina, answered the email request for pen pals. Her students are in their Exemplary Writing unit and are spending time talking about authentic opportunities. She and her class were excited to find a school with the same name. Our Whitehall Elementary School fourth grade students want to share and compare information about their school and selves with their new pen pals. Each student in Mrs. Milcarek's class was given the name of a student in Mrs. Benson's class and the letter writing has begun.

Fun In Fifth Grade - Paynter

The fifth grade students in Ms. Collet’s class at Paynter Elementary have had a lot of fun so far this year. There is a black and gold carpet in the back of the room, where we silent read. We can sit in the Steeler chairs or on the Steeler beanbag. They are cool! Our desks are in groups and we have team names and team captians. During class, we are allowed to catch a soft football when we answer questions. The football is autographed by Hines Ward (wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers!)

Just because we are having fun doesn’t mean we aren’t doing work. In Math class, we are talking about place value, estimating, and rounding. We even used quarterback ratings to help us learn decimals. In Science class, we are learning about levers and pulleys. We do cool experiments. During Social Studies class, we are learning about explorers and where they traveled and set short and long-term goals in Health class. We also have class pets. . We have two frogs named Rocky and Niko, and Gary the snail. It has been one busy year so far, but we are enjoying every minute of it!

First the students rubbed a balloon with a piece of wool to negatively charge it. By doing that, the balloon acts as a magnet and then, "Look Mom no hands!"
