Pennsylvania's public schools.
Whitehall
Elementary Character
Education
Character
education promotes positive character traits and
the examples for students to strive to treat others
the way we would want to be treated. Character education
helps students to understand, care about, and act
on the basic ethical and citizenship values. It
teaches qualities that will help students be good
citizens at home, school, and in their community.
It is the foundation for success.
Whitehall Elementary will be promoting character
education by selecting character traits for the
students to learn and exemplify. The word for the
months of September and October is respect.
Respect is showing admiration for a person or having
a sense of her or his good qualities. Everyone should
have an open mind and show respect for differences
in others. You should respect the teachers who are
working hard to give their students an education,
as well as your family members who are working hard
to raise you. If you want others to respect you,
you must do the same for them. Remember: those who
show respect, receive respect. Mrs. DeFilippo, teachers,
and staff will be looking and recognizing students
understanding and displaying respectful behavior.

Paynter
Students Learn About Character
As
September begins, Paynter Elementary School
continues its Character Education Program.
In addition to focusing on a monthly character
attribute, this year there will be an action
theme for each month. For example, in September,
the action theme is “Do Your Best”.
Within that theme, students will also focus
on the attribute perseverance. They will learn
that it means to keep on trying in spite of
obstacles. Making a connection between a concept
(perseverance) and an action (“Do Your
Best”) will assist students’ understanding
of the goal in mind. All students can relate
to doing their best.
To introduce freshman students to over 30 clubs,
organizations, and groups available at Baldwin High
School , an Activities Fair was held. The students
had the opportunity to visit the fair, talk with
group representatives, and sign-up to join. The
BHS PTSA helped to coordinate the fair.

Paynter - Bluebird Program
The third grade class of Mrs. Joy Smith at Paynter
Elementary enjoyed a visit from Mr. Mark Conedera,
an Environmental Engineer with U.S. Steel and Mrs.
Virginia Fisher, an administrative assistant from
U.S. Steel's Environmental Affairs department. They
presented a program on bluebirds and the nest box
monitoring at the wetland site at South Taylor Environmental
Park. The presentation also featured displays, nest
boxes and information on bluebirds and other birds
native to the area. Afterwards, the students discussed
what they learned.
The
first Parent Academy session of the 2003-2004
school year took place in the conference room
of the Green Meadows Complex. Harrison Middle
School vice principal Ms. Dorfzaun and teachers
Mr. Squeglia, Mr. Saras, Mr. Johnson, Mr.
Ross, and Mrs. Wells planned the first session
to promote the Middle School procedures and
to offer a means of opening lines of communication
with parents. The topics for discussion ranged
from discipline, agenda use, homework expectations,
tutoring, ways to contact teachers, available
student activities and
opportunities. The next
Parent Academy is 7:00 -9:00 p.m., October 7 at
Harrison Middle School. The topics for discussion
are PSSA Math strategies, Teen Read Week, Writing
Standards, Interdisciplinary Units, HMS activities,
and utilizing the 7th grade Science Curriculum.
Topics are subject to change.

The Pioneer Lady Visits 4th Grade Classroom-Whitehall
Professional storyteller Mrs. Kim Adley and her
son David, a Harrison Middle School 8th grade student
visited Mrs. Milcarek's fourth grade class at Whitehall
Elementary. The students recently finished reading
the book, Sarah Plain and Tall. "The Pioneer
Lady" (Mrs. Adley) told the tall tales of Pecos
Bill, Davey Crockett, and John Chapman (Jonny Appleseed).
The stories correlated with the westward movement
and hard times pioneers faced while on the trail.
The students learned about transportation, entertainment,
and the customs of the pioneer times.
