PAGE - Bridge Poems
PAGE (Pennsylvania Association for Gifted Education) sponsored a state-wide "CREATIVE CHALLENGE" for students in grades three through eight for the annual state conference which was held in Pittsburgh this year. The theme for this year's conference was Connecting the Pieces: Building the Bridges. In keeping with the theme, the contest required students to "take us from the real world to dreamland by building a bridge that symbolizes one of your most fantastic wishes and type a poem that explains the significance of the bridge."
Students could work individually or in teams. Bridges that earned Blue, Red, or White ribbons were displayed at the PAGE Conference. Harrison Middle School's team of Donald Huang Stephen Kovatch and Ian Lynch won a blue ribbon for their entry, Our Dream Bridge - Mixed Dreams; the team of Kayci Konopka, Theresa Walker, and Rachel Isaacs won a blue ribbon for their entry, Why? Why? Why?; the individual work of Kelsey Hallinen won a blue ribbon for her entry, The Bridge of My Dreams, and Sarah Gratzmiller won a blue ribbon for her entry, Music - My Bridge of Dreams.

The Bridge of My Dreams
Meet the Robot Bridge,
Full of dreams.
My dreams and the dreams of so many others,
The dreams of architects, and robotic engineers.
The greatest bridge in the world,
Full of hope, love, and inspiration.
The bridge that does not just span a river,
A bridge that spans the imagination.
The most wonderful bridge in the world,
A bridge that will help you in more than one way.
It will help you cross a river,
But will help you cross into your imagination.
Where you feel good about yourself,
Because others can build such a great structure.
Meet the bridge of my dreams,
Meet the Robot Bridge.

WHY? WHY? WHY?
Why can’t we all be together as one?
Why must we fight at the rise of the sun?
Why can’t there be unity among all of us?
Too many people bicker and fuss
Anything that is not concealed
People feel should be revealed
Just to embarrass and not to embrace.
Is it because of different gender or race?
Of course though, they won’t say it to your face
They spread words behind your back.
Some need practice, yet others have a knack.
Some do it just a little bit,
Others have a passion and just cannot quit
Some are not satisfied,
Until they practically have to hide.
So why can’t we be together as one?
Why is there no unity?
Why?
Could we live in peace or maybe try?

Music-My Bridge of Dreams
English,
Spanish,
Japanese…
Each language different,
As a snowflake caught in the breeze.
German,
French,
Cantonese…
Can you speak what they speak across the seven seas,
Or is it just a jumble like the buzz of bumble bees?
How could you communicate with a person who speaks Chinese,
If they write with symbols,
And they speak too fast for reality?
Music can express,
Can cause tears or laughter,
Different to each musician and the effect they’re after.
In music there is no language barrier,
No badly done translations,
And no misconceptions between nations.
Music knows no constructions,
It can be as beautiful as you want it to be,
You can change a song’s meaning by changing the melody.
Music is a bridge over the gap of speech,
Without words it can teach,
International language is the dream I preach.
I
Hope
My
Dream
Comes
True.

Our Dream Bridge
Mixed Dreams
We once saw a bridge made up of dreams,
just about everything we wanted was there.
There was an airplane flying above,
which could fly to just about anywhere.
It had a top speed of 10,000 mph,
Ian pictured himself in the ultimate luxury plane.
There was also a golf course flag on it which advertised,
you could even play polo on top of a horse.
There were robot cars and robot planes of every kind,
there were red ones and blue ones.
There were smart ones and stupid ones,
one even with a super-human mind.
Army men robots even had guns!
A mix of all our dreams this bridge was,
which was amazing, fabulous, and fun!
