Pirates
of Whitehall
"Pirates of Whitehall"? Mrs. Ridge's
fifth grade students at Whitehall Elementary have
been busy studying European explorers. With the help
of their favorite storyteller, Mrs. Adley, the students
now have a better understanding of the life of these
many explorers and pirates. Dressed as a fictional
pirate, Mrs. Adley used her special talents and great
sense of humor to share with the children her vast
knowledge of this time period. With a new appreciation
of the difficult life, the children are ready to
take on their independent study and become pirate
experts themselves.

- Character Education
As
a school-wide initiative at Whitehall Elementary,
character education will be introduced monthly
and reinforced through classroom activities
and/or school-wide projects. It is the hope
that character education and academic learning
develop into a strong, mutually-supportive
relationship. In caring classrooms and a school
where students feel liked and respected by
their teacher and fellow students, students
are more likely to work hard and achieve. Reciprocally,
when students are enabled to succeed at the
work in school, they are more likely to feel
valued and cared about as persons. In order
for the initiative to
be successful, all school staff must be involved
in learning about, discussing, and taking ownership
of the character education effort.
In conjunction with the
character education initiative, a positive referral
program called “Happy Grams” will be
used to randomly “catch our students being
good.” Each month teachers may refer two students
who display the monthly core value by their words
and actions. The “Happy Grams” will be
sent to the principals and the students will be rewarded
and their pictures will be displayed in the office. “Happy
Grams” will reinforce the importance of character
education and help students understand that a trip
to the principal’s office can be a positive
experience.
