The International Cafe luncheon was held to bring
groups of Baldwin High School students together to
eat and connect with the goal of creating a more
unified community of learners at the high school.
Ms. Mahsoob's Advanced Academic English students
met and chatted with the school's refugee and immigrant
population from Ms. Rock and Mrs. Niemi's ESL classes.
The Cafe serves as a starting point for a multicultural
research project that the students will complete
collaboratively in the spring. Plans are to have
the International Cafe monthly as a way of aligning
the District's Project Liberty goals with the high
school's Diversity committee goals.

- Geometric Turkey Project
Combining math with a Thanksgiving activity is
what Mrs. Siler’s class at Whitehall Elementary
did. Mrs. Marsteller visited the third grade classroom
to do a Geometric Turkey project with all the students.
Each student was given one circle to start the body
and a sheet of paper that had different kinds of
geometric shapes on it. They were encouraged to think “outside
of the box” to create a turkey using only shapes.
The results were amazingly different!

- Rube Goldberg Device
The students in Ms. Hicks physics class at
Baldwin High School designed and built a Rube Goldberg
device. A Rube Goldberg device is a complex machine
that does a simple task (named after Rube Goldberg,
a cartoonist who was known for drawing complicated
inventions to do simple things, such as sharpen a
pencil). For this unit on machines, the students
had to design a machine to pour water into another
container and explain their invention in a report.

- English Class Tableaus
Baldwin High School sophomore students in Ms.
Mahsoob's Academic English class performed "tableaus" in
response to the multicultural novel Roll of Thunder,
Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. Students picked
significant scenes from the novel and posed in
role while sharing a line that reflected the character's
thoughts or feelings. The goal of the project was
to have students analyze themes, characters, and
symbols as well as to increase their knowledge
and understanding of the novel as part of the high
school's "Adopt an Anchor" initiative.
Many students responded that they had learned to
be more empathetic by saying, "I learned how
badly African Americans had it back then. This
was just the story of one family. I can't imagine
how many other families went through something
similar and how it must have felt to be put in
a situation like the one the Logan's had to face."

- Reading is Caring
December was "caring" month at Whitehall
Elementary. Caring was defined as "being concerned
about and showing kindness towards someone else." Mrs.
Finet's third grade class decided to participate
in the Scholastic Book Club's annual "Classrooms
Care" program. The goal for the class of 26
students was to read a total of 100 books by December
23 so that Scholastic would donate 100 books in their
honor to children in need through the charitable
organizations First Book, Reach Out and Read, and
Save the Children. The students were successful in
meeting the goal. The "gifts of giving were
wrapped with caring." They were excited to be
part of this terrific program and look forward to
seeing their class name listed on the "ClassroomsCare
Readers' Hall of Fame" on the ClassroomsCare
Website www.scholastic.com/ClassroomsCare.
The students will receive a Certificate of Thanks
from the charities and Scholastic Book Clubs, but
the greatest reward was knowing they cared enough
to give the gift of reading to others less fortunate.
