MES - McAnnulty Celebrates 100 Day

McAnnulty Elementary celebrated 100 Day. That is the one hundredth day of school. It was a great opportunity to make learning relevant to the students and also was an occasion for some great hands-on learning activities. Children worked with their parents to create clothing that represents the number 100 and teachers planned classroom activities to characterize this important number in children’s lives. Each year it is a fun and useful learning experience.

PES - Animal Friends Visit

Mrs. Sue Froehlich, from Animal Friends, brought an unusual visitor to Paynter Elementary. It was Marlo, her daughter's Weimerheimer dog, who was procured from Animal Friends animal shelter located in the Strip District of Pittsburgh. Ms. Graff's fourth graders were enamored with Marlo, who wore her snowman scarf and followed all the school's rules while she was visiting.
Mrs. Froehlich captured the attention of the children relating stories of all the animals at the shelter, how they find homes, what the volunteers do while they are there with the animals, and all the services that
Animal Friends offers to the public. She shared pictures with the students of dogs that she had taken into her home and nursed back to health. The students enjoyed every minute of the time spent learning about homeless dogs and their destinies. Mrs. Froehlich allowed the children to pet and hug Marlo before they headed back to their classrooms. Marlo’s and Mrs. Froehlich’s visit was prompted by a story the students recently read about a visiting dog.

WES - Guinea, Africa Presentation

The students in Mrs. McMillen's fifth grade Whitehall Elementary class enjoyed seeing African artwork during a presentation on Guinea, Africa. Following a business trip to the African country, Mrs. McMillen's son, Keith, shared his experiences, pictures, and souvenirs with the children. Ebony animal carvings and photos of Guinea villages sparked great interest in the students. After giving each child a 200 Franc Guinea bill, Keith briefly explained the devastating inflation plaguing the French colony and the low U.S. rate of exchange for the money. The students questioned Keith on everything from Guinea schools to the types of vehicles driven by the locals. The class looks forward to reading Keith's emails when he returns to Guinea in March.

BHS - Mardi Gras

Baldwin High School French II classes prepared for Mardi Gras by spending time in the Language lab and exploring several interactive sites to learn the history and traditions of Mardi Gras, including the history of eating crepes on this day. Crepes date back to the Middle Ages when the faithful needed to use all of their eggs and butter so as not to be tempted to eat these foods during Lent. The students own Mardi Gras celebration included the making and eating of this delicious culinary tradition. In addition to the crepes, the students enjoyed a Mardi Gras Trivia Game, based on material learned in the Language Lab the day before and a traditional race that is popular in some French provinces. The race contestants must flip a pancake into a pan three times without dropping it and at the same time, be the first to cross the finish line.
