At Whitehall Elementary, Mrs. Larson and Mrs. Walsh
had their fourth grade students experience the art
of baking firsthand by participating in a biscuit
bake-off. Each class prepared a different biscuit
recipe from scratch while using their skills in measurement.
The students then created a sign advertising their
biscuits for the bake-off. All students enjoyed this
delicious activity, which was inspired by the story “Justin
and the Best Biscuits”. A group of students'
parents and grandparents joined in to help make this
activity a fun success.

Ms. Sandy Brooks Minetti assisted, as students
practiced peer revision exercises, created
list and object poems, and used phrases pulled
from a paper bag to fashion their own stories.
The culminating activity was writing an ekphrastic

- Art Masterpieces
Whitehall Elementary fifth grade students in Ms.
Metrovich and Mr. Cendroski's homerooms created their
own renditions of famous works of art by creating
a print in Mrs. Cooley's Art Class. Students learned
how to create a monoprint and how to register a print
using reproductions of various paintings that were
taped under clear laminate. They interpreted the
paintings into their own colors using tempera paint
on top of the laminate. Each time they added color,
they needed to register the print and print the color
onto the paper. Students later added detail to the
print using a fine tip marker when the paint dried.

- Graphing Project
At Paynter Elementary, Ms. Wolf's third grade class
is graph-crazy after completing their graph presentations.
Following two weeks of working on a math chapter
on data analysis, the students were off to gather
information on a topic of their own. First, each
student chose a question and created voting slips.
Next, the students visited classrooms from kindergarten
through fifth grade to gather their data.
At home, the children organized their voting results
into tally charts and then created a bar graph
or a pictograph. The students then displayed their
finished work on poster boards. When the projects
came into school, the students drew conclusions based
on the result. For example, what was the most popular
school lunch? How many more students voted for
pizza than chicken nuggets.
