As a culminating activity for their science investigations
and English Compare and Contrast writing unit at
Whitehall Elementary, Mr. Stoehr's fifth grade class
put these skills to use in the manufacture of 26
different questions of scientific interest in the
fields of electricity and magnetism, botany, zoology,
physics, chemistry, health and medicine, and earth/space
science. The students constructed experiment display
boards that illustrated data they had collected and
exhibited the conclusions that the students discovered
as a result of their inquiries.

Music is in the air at Paynter Elementary School.
Continuing in the tradition of a yearly musical,
Paynter Elementary fourth and fifth grade students
presented “A Celebration of American Music.” The
students performed several different types of American
music, from Patriotic to American Folk Music. Also,
as a belated tribute to Music In Our Schools Month,

- Biographies
Elvis spotted at Paynter Elementary!
Two of Mrs. Wright’s fifth graders,
Dylan Gumbel and Parker Balla, sure look
a lot like Michael Jordan and Elvis. They
and their classmates each chose a historical
figure, researched, and then dressed as the
historical figure and presented their information
to other classrooms.

- Visit to the Aviary
The four first grade classes from Paynter Elementary
went on a field trip to the National Aviary in the
North Side. It was an exciting day for the students
seeing the more than 600 birds that live there and
learning many facts about them. Pittsburgh is lucky
to have the only independent indoor non-profit bird
zoo in the entire United States! Some of the birds
that the students saw included: owls, penguins, macaws,
flamingoes, a vulture, and two Bald Eagles. After
recently reading the McGraw-Hill Reading Series stories
Owl and the Moon, Night Animals, and The Story of
a Blue Bird, students were able to identify some
birds on their own. Mr. Smith and Mr. Brennfleck’s
classes were especially happy to see their student
teachers Mrs. Rau and Miss McCaulsky who came back
for the trip.

Special
Olympics
There were 546 athletes, ages eight to eighty,
competing at this year’s Special Olympics Summer
Games held at Baldwin High School. Every May each
year since 1987, Baldwin – Whitehall schools
have hosted Allegheny County’s annual summer
games for people with disabilities. This was the
second year that the Baldwin-Whitehall School District
fielded its own team of athletes: the Baldwin – Whitehall
Highlanders. Unlike other athletic organizations,
the number of medals won and by which team are not
tabulated. Every athlete competed to the best of
their ability and in doing so, set personal records
of which they are all proud. Once again, Baldwin
High School teacher, Mr. Joe Murray organized this
event that included not only the competing athletes,
but over 200 coaches and hundreds of students, district
employees, and community volunteers. Click
