Santimauro's third grade students at Whitehall Elementary
observed "mystery" rocks by using hand
lenses to determine their specific names. Rock booklets,
full of clues, were created by the students for help.

- 8A and 8C Carnaval & Mardi Gras Celebration
Teams 8A & 8C celebrate Carnaval/Mardi Gras!
The Spanish and French classes celebrated their respective
cultural holidays of Carnaval and Mardi Gras. Upon
beginning the festivities, the students received
beads to wear. A King and a Queen were randomly picked,
crowned, and adorned with more beads. Each student
created a mask to wear and to be judged. The creativity
was fantastic! Traditional foods were prepared and
served. After eating, the students played two different
games: the crepe toss and spoon-the-balloon. The
winners received more beads!

- Saltworks
Saltworks Theatre creates, produces, and performs
original dramatic productions to help teens sort
out the messages bombarding them in society and challenge
them to make healthy decisions and definitions that
will positively affect the rest of their lives. The
performance at Harrison Middle School, of Three Long
Days, was a high energy look at five students who
at first see only stereotypes, but by the end of
the show discover real people with real feelings
and emotions. They learn to respect each other and
their differences.

- Toys for Tots
Baldwin High School students in Mr. Crawford's
Materials Technology class proved that the wooden
rocking horses they made are durable, functional,
and fun! Of course, the horses are not recommended
for use by anyone over the age of five. The students
constructed the beautiful toy rocking horses and
donated them to the United States Marines' Toys for
Tots program. An officer collected the horses and
thanked the boys for their excellent work and commitment
to help a child in need.

A leader helps himself and others do their very
best and to support and encourage others in times
of success and disappointment. A leader sets a positive
example for others to follow. A leader understands
his purpose and strives for the very best. These

Steelers' Player Development and Assistant Side-lines
Coach, Anthony Griggs. Coach Griggs visited the students
at Whitehall Elementary to discuss the Character
Education trait of Leadership. He followed up his
discussion by answering questions about Steeler players.

- Pioneers of Flight
At Whitehall Elementary, Mrs. Holmes fourth grade
students completed their Science Flight Unit with
a research project on famous pioneers of flight.
Each student was assigned a flight pioneer and then
researched information the library and on the internet.
After writing a report, each student shared their
researched knowledge on their pioneer of flight in
an oral presentation to the class.

- Kindergarten Learning Centers
Mrs. McWilliams' kindergarten students at Paynter
Elementary have been very busy at their learning
centers. Within one center, the young learners are
given the opportunity to explore and identify wooden
pyramids, cubes, cones, cylinders, and block shapes.
Another center allows the students to use magnifying
glasses to view seashells and then create size patterns
with the shells. The alphabet center offers the fun
of using alphabet cards to make color and letter
patterns and to make real words.

- Paynter Kit Collectors
A group of Paynter students
are learning that volunteering and service
is very important. The Paynter Kit Collectors
help the school's librarian, Mrs. Schubert,
in the library each morning before classes
start. The students gather the “kits” from
each classroom and bring them to the library,
where the books are checked in and reshelved.

- Career Speaker Program
The Career Speaker Program
at Baldwin High School offers students the
opportunity to learn abut careers through
small group meetings with individuals who
work in a variety of occupations. The speakers
present information about the responsibilities
involved in the career, the training required,
the current average salaries and employment
opportunities, and the probability for advancement
within the career. At these meetings, students
are able to ask questions that may help them
to clarify their career choices. Overall,
the Career Speaker Program at Baldwin High
School gives students a chance to gather
information that might
not be readily available
to them, thus assisting students in making informed
career decisions. Recently, Mr. Jesse Siefert, a
Baldwin High School Class of 2000 alumni, provided
information on the professional career of paramedics
and EMTs.

- The Lesson
After reading, The Lesson, in the McGraw-Hill
reading series, former Baldwin High School graduate,
Caitlin Lim, visited Mrs. Wright’s fifth grade
students at Paynter Elementary and brought items
pertaining to her championship horse, Scooby. She
described how she trained Scooby and compared him
to the wild horses of the Outer Banks that the students
studied in Social Studies.

The joy of reading is celebrated on Dr. Seuss's
Birthday at McAnnulty Elementary. Teachers integrate
fun, learning activities into their day in recognition
of this man that brought joy to so many children.

- February Happy Grams
Students at Whitehall Elementary
do not need a special day to celebrate their
patriotism. For the month of February, students
were encouraged to show their patriotism
by doing something good for our community.
Many students shared their patriotic feelings
by writing essays on why they are proud to
be an American. The essays remind all of
us of the many freedoms and opportunities
we have in this country. Students from each
grade level were recognized by their teachers
and administrators during the monthly Happy
Gram recognition. Congratulations to all
of the students recognized this month!

- Check Writing
Mr. Fisher's class at Whitehall Elementary are
completing a checkbook activity to relate fourth
grade math concepts to a real life situation. This
activity reinforces the concept of fractions, decimals,
adding, subtracting, and word form; while helping
the students realize the struggles of keeping and
balancing a checkbook. Each day, the students are
given a list of receipts in which they are responsible
for writing checks and keeping a balance sheet.

- World War I Infantryman
Baldwin High School senior Rob Rossi shared his
knowledge and collection of World War I items with
the students in Mr. Geisler's AP History classes.
For this presentation, Rob dressed as an American
World War I infantryman and described the items a
typical soldier would have. Many of these items,
such as helmets, mess kits, patches, medals, trench
kits, shell casings, and back packs are part of his
personal collection. He is also knowledgeable on
the history of World War II and has military items
from this time period.

-Reading With the Stars
Whitehall Elementary third and fourth grade students
enjoyed a very special evening as they celebrated
reading with Whitehall PTA's program READING WITH
THE STARS. This program, in its eleventh year, was
designed to promote the love of reading and to encourage
young readers, to be life-long readers. This year's
guest readers included: Whitehall Police DARE Officer
Bruce, a graphic artist, the Mon Valley Cloggers,
Pittsburgh Rivehound players, Judge David Barton,
Steel City Martial Arts instructors, a Syria Shriner,
Mr. Kevin Fischer of the Baldwin-Whitehall School
Board, and WTAE's Andrew Stockey. Guest readers shared
their enjoyment of literature through selected readings.

- Joy Mine Co. Visit
In conjunction with the ASSET unit, Rocks and
Minerals, the third grade students at Whitehall Elementary
had a visitor from the Joy Mine Company. Mrs. Donna
Gumbel met with each third grade classroom to discuss
the mining of rocks and minerals. The students were
given an opportunity to explore several minerals
and to determine what different products were made
from them. The students were surprised to learn that
the mineral, gypsum, is in the cream filling of Twinkies.
Also, the students discussed why mining is important,
and one student per class was given the opportunity
to dress up like a real miner.

- The Pajama Game Street Banners
Baldwin High School's graphic arts students are
helping to promote the upcoming spring musical, The
Pajama Game. Under the direction of
Mr. Kevin Jones, the students made three street banners
that advertises the April 13 - 16 show. Reserved
seat tickets for all performances are $8 for adults

-Biographical Sketch Day
At Whitehall Elementary, Mrs. Delon’s fourth
grade students invited very special guests into the
classroom. Mrs. Dorrian, Mrs. Delon’s student
teacher from Chatham University, had a Biographical
Sketch Day as part of a culminating activity for
her student teaching experience. The children were
to select someone they knew who had made a difference
in their life. The children were to interview that
person. Then, the interview was turned into a narrative,
multi-paragraph paper. The students demonstrated
their word processing skills by typing their papers
and adding clip art. Their special person was then
invited into school for Biographical Sketch Day.
The students were able to share their paper with
that special person and were amazed to discover many
new things about their loved one.

- Math Concepts
Students in Ms. Melissa Olds' classes at Paynter
Elementary have been busy learning math concepts.
The third grade students studied the characteristics
of three dimensional shapes, then constructed them
using toothpicks and gumdrops; the fourth grade students
have been using their measurement skills to create
maps that lead to buried treasure; and the fifth
grade students applied their skills in geometry and
measurement to create blueprints of their dream homes.

AMERICA returned to Paynter Elementary School
on March 2, 2005. Derek McKenzie, from the
Pittsburgh Riverhounds, visited Paynter to
read to all the students in the school. After
perusing a book authored by Dr. Seuss, Derek
discussed the importance of reading to achieve
your goals in life.

At Paynter Elementary on St.
Patrick's Day, Mrs. Mervos’s kindergarten
class had a visit from first grade student
Harrison Solenday. Harrison is a former kindergarten
student of Mrs. Mervos'. He shared a few
pictures and mementos from his mother's trip
to Ireland and shared a story that he wrote.

- Design and Decorative Application
At Baldwin High School, the students in Ms.Ginny
Pfatteicher's Design and Decorative Application class
are putting their new skills to work as they help
with sanding, painting, cleaning, designing and sewing
various elements for the upcoming school musical, "The
Pajama Game", April 13 through April 16. This
class includes a variety of design projects and was
developed for those students who are creative and
think out of the box. The students learn the Elements
and Principles of Design and apply this knowledge
in designing purses, memory boards, and other fashion
and home interior accessories.

At Paynter Elementary, Mrs. McWilliams' morning
kindergarten students played a new game called "Kangaroo
Hop". Letter person, Miss K, brought a bag of
letters and sight words for each child. Using a kangaroo

- Belonging Quilt
After reading The Keeping
Quilt by Patricia Polacco, Mrs. Snee's students
created their own ESL Belonging Quilt. Each
child chose a special word to describe what
was important in their lives in the United
States. The students printed their word on
a construction paper square and illustrated
it. They then sewed it together creating
a pattern of yellow, green and orange. The
quilt was displayed outside their classroom
at Harrison Middle School. Words chosen were:
Happiness, Wealth, Park, Food, Peace, Transportation,
Health, Computer, Love, Home, Jobs, Friends,
School, Library, Music, Soccer, Golf, Teachers,
Teen Drop Center, Clothes, Football, Basketball,
and Swimming.

- Fire Chief Visits Paynter
Mr. Paul Bronder, chief of
Baldwin #1 Fire Co., visited Ms. Graff's
first grade class at Paynter Elementary.
The children had just completed a story called
Firefighter. Mr. Bronder brought his attire
worn in fighting fires. The students were
in awe of the weight of his jacket, pants,
helmet, and boots. He brought his air tank,
ax, "door bell", and other pieces
of fire fighting equipment that led to many
interesting discussions. He allowed the children
to handle the nozzle of the hoses that are
used to squelch fires. As a culminating activity,
Mr. Bronder presented each of the children
with a firehat, coloring page, pencil, eraser,
and stickers that they could take home with
them.
