The holidays were a busy time at Paynter Elementary.
The week before the holiday break, students enjoyed
musical entertainment in the lobby in the mornings.
The day before the break, Santa and Mrs. Claus paid
a visit to kindergarten classrooms. In the afternoon,
a school-wide sing-a-long led by staff was a great
way to kick off the celebration. During the assembly,
Santa chose a raffle ticket to see who would be the
lucky winner of an autographed Hines Ward Steelers
jersey. The lucky student was Matthew Busch. Raffle
proceeds of over $1000 were donated to the Childrens
Hospital of Pittsburgh Caring Place.

- Gingerbread Houses
Teamwork was the key to the recent holiday activity
in which Miss Anderson’s first grade students
and Mrs. Bruder’s second grade students participated.
The students were split into four groups in order
to construct a gingerbread house. Each group was
required to use various materials provided to assist
them with creating their own gingerbread house design.
This activity involved input from all members of
each team. These two classes worked very well together
and the students proved that teamwork has its own
rewards. The four finished houses displayed unique
characteristics, making each stand out from the rest.
During the construction process, the students had
a chance to sing holiday songs and share their creative
ideas. The houses themselves proved to be a delicious
reward for all!

Snowflakes, raindrops, lightening bolts jagging from
a nimbus cloud, and a simulated thermometer were
some of the creations made by the children. Mr. Cropper
accurately and simply explained how weather is forecasted
by showing the students an attention-grabbing power

- Blood Drive
The Central Blood Bank collected a record number
of units (125) at the annual December Baldwin High
School blood drive. Students are to be commended
for their generosity. Many students were inspired
to donate by the needs of one of their classmates,
who requires blood in the fight against Wilson's
disease. In addition to the many donors, students
from the Red Cross Club and others volunteered their
time at the canteen. Baldwin High School remains
on outstanding source in this local area in helping
to save lives through blood donation.

- MS Read-a-Thon
With the start of the third annual Multiple Sclerosis
Read-a-Thon at Paynter Elementary, a group of Baldwin
High School football players and cheerleaders visited
with the students to talk about the importance of
reading. The players shared their thoughts on how
reading has had a great impact on their lives. The
cheerleaders led the Paynter students in "reading" cheers.
The program was a great kick-off to encourage the
students to become better readers and at the same
time raise money for MS research. Through the years,
funds raised from the MS Read-a-Thons have helped
lead to the development of new drugs that treat some
types of Multiple Sclerosis.

At
McAnnulty Elementary, Mrs. Hustava and Mrs.
Foote's first grade students combined their
Steeler pride with their current math unit.
The students designed and followed a pattern
to make quilt patches. They carried that a
step further by making a Steeler quilt. They
followed a pattern, cut some squares on the
diagonal to fit the diamond shape and then
glued the patches on a black or yellow background.
The constructed Steeler quilt was then hung
in their classroom window so that everyone
from the street could see their black and gold
quilt creation.

Seventh grade gifted support students at Harrison
Middle School recently created and participated in
a Dickens of a Victorian Christmas Tea as an extension

Every student who attended had some associated responsibility
for the planning and/or production of the simulation.
Some of the students presented Powerpoint reports
on the research they did on the Victorian Age. Tea
and small hors d’oeuvres were then served,
while Victorian Christmas music played in the background,
followed by the playing of traditional Victorian
parlor games. The students in attendance enjoyed

Recently at Whitehall Elementary, the children
in Mrs Delon’s fourth grade classroom explored

pellet in hopes to propel their knowledge of skeletons

identify various parts of rodents’ skeletons
discovered within the pellets. In addition, the students
applied their knowledge of bones by reconstructing
a replica human skeleton. The Human Body is a unit
of study through Asset Science program. It focuses
on students learning through exploration. The children
love these hands-on activities and are able to apply
what they have learned within the lessons.
