At Baldwin High School, Ms. Giles' physics classes
are involved with the Electricity and Magnetism unit,
where the first topic of study is static electricity.
The students participated in an activity using an
electrostatic generator, commonly referred to as
a Van de Graaff machine. It is used to generate static
charges and discharges. Students isolated themselves
from being able to ground the charges its generating
by standing on a wooden chair, then placed their
hand on the machines's dome before it was turned
on. The students became part of the surface where
the excess electronic charge distributed itself.
These charges moved onto surfaces by the repulsive
forces between like charges. The electric repulsive
force between these subatomic particles is so strong,
that it overcomes the gravitational force of the
earth on individual strands of hair, making them
stand up, as the charges moved as far away from each
other as possible, toward the end of the hair.

- Paynter Talent Show
The stars at Paynter Elementary were shining!
The PTA sponsored the First Annual Paynter Elementary
School Talent Show. Approximately 80 students were
involved in the production. Whether the students
were performing, emceeing, or working on the stage
crew – it was evident that all of the students
had to work together to make the show a success.
Due to the abundance of entries, there were three
winners in the “Design the Cover” contest – Gage
Nugent, Lydia Gallagher, and Stacey Vitunic. However,
the big winner of the evening was the Caring Fund
for Children. The show's proceeds of $387 was donated
to the organization.

- Dr. Suess Rhyming
Mrs. Santimauro's third grade students at Whitehall
Elementary are learning about rhyming words. In recognition
of Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss's birthday,
the students listened to the story, The Cat in
the Hat by Dr. Seuss. During the reading, they
identified the words that rhymed. They will later
use some of the words to create their own rhyming
poems.

- Student Raise Money for Charity
Students and staff of Paynter Elementary raised
$678.50 for Feed the Children, a charity that helps
hungry and homeless children, including victims of
Hurricane Katrina, and other tragedies. The fundraising
campaign was sponsored by the Music Educators National
Conference and began with the students participating
in the World’s Largest Concert on March 9,
2006. Music teachers all over the United States collected
donations. With the help of music teacher, Nancy
Booth, Paynter was one of the top fundraising schools
in the nation. We are proud of our school for participating

- Walk Across America
At Whitehall Elementary, Whitehall’s Wildcat
Walkers have started their virtual hike across our
fifty great mainland States. Along with Miss Boni
and Mrs. Hull, students are using pedometers to keep
track of their walking mileage during three sessions
before school, one session each for third, fourth
and fifth grade levels. Students on average have
been walking about a mile and a half during each
thirty minute session and they are keeping track
of their miles together on a website. They are following
a mapped out trail that will lead them around to
each State capital. So far, they have “visited” Albany,
New York, Montpelier, Vermont, Augusta, Maine, Concord,
New Hampshire, Boston, Massachusetts,and Providence,
Rhode Island. Next stop…Trenton, New Jersey.
Walkers learn a bit about each capital and will be
rewarded when their journey is through with an All-American
Healthy Breakfast in the spring.

- Mock Trial Competition
The 2005-2006 Baldwin High School Mock Trial team
made Baldwin High School history this season. They
were the first team in five years to progress to
the county playoffs. This achievement was possible
due to the team's stellar victories against Hillel
Academy and Pine-Richland in February. The Allegheny
County Mock Trial competition pits area schools against
each other in real courtroom situations. The students
play the roles of lawyers and witnesses and try a
case before a judge/jury of professional lawyers.
The team was led by seniors Jeannette Day and Anna
Kail who are Mock Trial veterans and will be missed
next year. Juniors Jim Morris, Bobby Ryan, and Sara
Grubb also played key roles in both wins. Great performances
by sophomores Keri Hartman, Trish Ward, Anna Hale,
Justin Tomko, and Sara Gratzmiller helped the team
seal its victories. Unfortunately, inexperience caught
up with the team in the playoffs. Coaches Ms. Katie
Pisowicz and Mrs. Kate Presto are very excited about
the way this year's team performed and, with such
a young, talented team, look forward to another fabulous
season next year.

- Kit Collectors
Paynter
Elementary Library's student volunteer Kit
Collectors are to be commended for their consistent,
responsible, and fine work. Each morning, student
volunteers from grades three through five come
to the library, collect all books being returned
that day by library patrons at Paynter, and
help the librarian check in all materials.
This leaves more class time for library lessons,
time for students to check out newly-needed
materials, and daily reshelving of returned
books for continued use.

- My One and Only Banners
The spring musical, My One and Only,
will be well-advertised through the efforts of Baldwin
High School graphic arts teacher Mr. Kevin Jones.
One of the activities of the graphic arts course,
a production job, requires students to design a banner
for this year’s spring production. Students
Jon Loadman and Chris Hreha accepted this assignment
and their banners are currently displayed in the
community. The students were chosen by Mr. Jones
specifically because of their conscientiousness in
completing projects. Click

- George Washington's Breakfast
At McAnnulty Elementary, the students in Mrs.
Gresh's class enjoyed a sample of hoe-cakes during
their library class time with Mrs. Rohm. After hearing
the historical fiction book George Washington's
Breakfast by Jean Fritz, they learned many true
facts about George Washington. One fact was that
he ate hoe-cakes for breakfast. Hoe cakes are a traditional
Southern cornmeal pancake that are supposed to have
been so-named because they were originally cooked
on the blade of a hoe over an open fire.
