- Creative Writing
At Whitehall Elementary, Miss Metrovich’s
fifth grade students have been working on creative
writing. In their first assignment, the students
pretended to be Christopher Columbus traveling on
the open sea. They researched a travel time line
about Christopher Columbus and chose five facts to
incorporate throughout their journals.
In the second assignment, the students wrote Halloween
stories about a haunted house. They had to include
15 prepositional phrases such as “Up the stairs
I crept…” and “Across the room
I saw…” to help enhance their writing.
To set the mood for their story share time, the students
dimmed the overhead classroom lights, used flash
lights, and created special sound effects for all
of the screams, creaking doors, and thumps.

The kindergarten students at Paynter Elementary
celebrated Fire Safety Week with special visitors.
Firemen from the Baldwin Borough Volunteer Fire Department
brought equipment and a ladder truck to the school.
The students were very interested to see how the
heavy gear was worn and how the oxygen tanks and
tools were used in fighting fires. The highlight
of the day was when a kindergarten teacher had a
chance to ride the bucket seventy-five feet high
up into the air. The firefighters left each of the
students with a Fire Safety booklet and their very

- Gingerbread House
At Whitehall Elementary, Mrs. Renee Christman's
students created a gingerbread model of their school
and submitted it to the third annual PPG Gingerbread
House Competition. The eight students first went
outside to sketch the front of their school building,
then made a paper model to use as patterns. The students
constructed the walls and roof with the gingerbread
pieces and lots of Royal Icing. The students attached
Smarties on the roof and Nerds outlining the windows.
Other decorations included Twinkie school buses,
Ice Blue Mints for the glass block windows, gum doors,
Hershey bar steps, coconut grass, and a sign made
out of alphabet pasta. Of course, there was plenty
of left over candy to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth.
This delectable creation won third place in the competition.
The gingerbread "Whitehall School" will
be displayed at Two PPG Place downtown from November
18 to January 6.

- Autumn Bowl
After school on October 27, 2005, Harrison Middle
School hosted its fifth annual Autumn Bowl. This
Harrison Student Leadership Council project, designed
to promote school spirit, featured a Powder-Puff
Football Game with seventh grade girls competing
against eighth grade girls, as well as other attractions.
This year’s Powder Puff game was wonderfully
entertaining for all those who participated and watched.
With the seventh and eighth grade boys’ “cheerleading
squads” as well as their fans cheering them
on, both teams put forth an incredible effort, resulting
in quite a competitive game. However, only one team
could win. Again this year, the eighth grade girls,
coached by Mr. Housteau and Mr. Saras, won over the
seventh grade girls, coached by Mr. Johnson and Mr.
Kaleta by a score of 41-32. Mr. Cherico, Mr. Paulos
and Mr. Squeglia officiated the game to ensure fair
play. Harrison students and staff agreed that this
year’s Autumn Bowl was a great success!

- Kids on the Block
The Kids on the Block group visited McAnnulty
Elementary and presented a program that teaches children
about disabilities through the use of a puppet show.
The “Kids” are a group of child-sized
puppets that speak, act, and dress like real children.
Some of the puppets have disabilities, some do not.
These characters demonstrated to the children what
it’s like to have a disability and helped to
alleviate fears. Professional puppeteers performed
skits that focused on what children with disabilities
can and cannot do and how to treat them fairly. Most
importantly, the puppets presented a lesson on understanding
the exceptional child’s hopes, fears, and capabilities.
This entertaining program educates people about disabilities
in a non threatening way and helps to develop positive
attitudes.

Mix It Up Day is a one day national event that
supports young people who want to change the social
climate of their schools. The idea is to have students
swap seats during lunch, to step out of their comfort
zones, and to connect with new people. On November
15, Ms. Williams, Mrs. Cooper, and Ms. Leadbitter "mixed
it up" during fourth period lunch at Harrison
Middle School. Students and teachers were notified
of Mix It Up Day and how it would work a week prior
to the day. Daily announcements were made to promote
the day, and students completed diversity surveys
and activities during homebase. The event was quite
an interesting experience and enabled students to
engage in social interaction and meet other seventh

their holiday preparations. Mrs. Hustava’s,

Mrs. Bova, and Mrs. Peretin, student assistance
paraprofessionals, the children created spectacular
