- Library on the Go
Library-on-the-Go
is an exciting new addition to the Support/ESL
Services program at Harrison Middle School.
Students now have the option of utilizing the
newly remodeled library or relaxing in their
classroom while books are delivered to them,
ala cart! Barnes & Noble generously donated
books to get them started on this new venture.
These multi-grade level books are being used
in the Support Service and ESL classrooms to
motivate the middle school readers. The students
can then participate in the Reading Counts
program offered to all Harrison students. Special
thanks to Mr. Metz of Barnes & Noble at
the Waterfront, Elisabeth Crittenden (ESL teacher),
Sara Jump (librarian), and Joyce Cole (paraprofessional.)

- Johnny Appleseed Fun
The sweet smell of apples filled the halls at McAnnulty
Elementary as Mrs. Rita Hustava's and Mrs. Nancy
Foote's first grade classes joined together for a
culminating activity for their unit about Johnny
Appleseed. The students enjoyed looking for the star
inside a cut apple, using beginning map skills as
they traced his travels in the wilderness, peeling
apples with an old-fashioned apple peeler, learning
the ingredients for apple butter, and using their
best manners at the delicious breakfast of apple
butter, homemade bread, apple juice, and apple slices.
They also read different versions of Johnny Appleseed's
story and reenacted the story on the flannel board.
It was so much fun; the children hardly noticed that
they were learning.

- Matisse-like Art
At Whitehall Elementary, the students in Mrs.
Cooley's third grade classes have studied about the
life and art of artist Henri Matisse. After examining
his work, they created a stencil and printed Matisse
like shapes on a colored piece of paper. Students
then examined the shape to determine what is was
or what they could turn it into. Students in Mrs.
Chuhaniuk's class are pictured working on their designs.
Students were encouraged to overlap shapes, and add
details using the shapes they cut out, as well as
the negative space shapes they created. Students
will write about how they thought of their idea and
the process that they went through to create their
work.

- Denim Day 2005
Teachers at Paynter Elementary School in the Baldwin-Whitehall
School District participated in Lee National Denim
Day on Friday, October 7, 2005. Through donations
the group raised over $2,100 for the Susan G. Komen
Foundation to support breast cancer research! Donned
in pink and denim from head to toe, the teachers
began their day with a kick-off breakfast celebration.
Grade level and special area groups showed their
enthusiasm by dressing in a team theme. There were
pink flamingos, pink ladies, energetic exercisers,
Paynter painters, and Cowgirls for the Cure, to name
a few. Mrs. Betty Taiclet, Principal, coordinates
donations from staff members throughout the other
schools in the district as well. The Paynter
staff definitely knows how to show that “Together
