Paynter Elementary and Whitehall Elementary third,
fourth, and fifth grade students interested in band
and orchestra took part in instrument try-outs. Instrumental
music teachers Mr. Michael Clancy, Mrs. Debbie Vavrek,
Mr. Allan Link, and Mr. Alan Booth gave the interested
students the opportunity to try to hold and play
a variety of musical instruments that they are considering.
The teachers then helped the aspiring musicians determine
the instrument that is best suited for them both
physically and musically.

- Patriotism
The Whitehall PTA sponsored Patriotism Week on
September 6 - 9. Students were asked to show our
soldiers that Whitehall Elementary have the "American
Spirit" and are thinking about them. Students
showed their American spirit and heart by wearing
red, white, and blue throughout the week, bringing
in an item for a care package that will be sent to
Iraq, and by writing a letter or a card to a soldier.
The care boxes, located in the front lobby, were
quickly filled each morning.

- Computer and Technology
At Harrison Middle School, the sixth grade students
will add Mrs. Grattan’s Technology and Computers
course to their four - nine week Unified Arts rotations.
The District purchased thirty-two new state-of-the-art
computers and renovated a lab for student use. Students
in Technology and Computers will be using Microsoft
Office products, MicroType 4, and the Internet to
meet Pennsylvania Academic State Standards for Science
and Technology.

- Steeler Spirit
Two of Paynter Elementary teachers' most devoted
Steeler fans, Ms. Collet and Ms. Petrilla, were happy
to show their Steeler pride on the first Spirit Day
of the school year. Joining them are some fourth
and fifth graders.

- Garnish Lab
At Baldwin High School, Mrs. Brennfleck's and Ms.
Szulczewski's Food Service classes practiced their
garnish skills in preparation of the opening of the
Tea Room. Each group was supplied with the same variety
of fruits and vegetable and the students supplied
creativity and imagination. A variety of teachers
voted for the most creative display for each class,
but all groups were a huge success.

- Music Class
At Harrison Middle School, sixth grade students
in Mr. Thomas' music classuse a variety of techniques
to learn music. The students recently practiced the
scales and simple tunes on instruments such as xylophones,
bells, and boomwhackers, while Mr. Thomas accompanied
them on the guitar.

- Star Spangled Banner
Paynter Elementary students celebrated with thousands
of schools and communities across the nation to sing
our National Anthem simultaneously at 9:00 AM on
September 14, 2005. This was a national event honoring
the anniversary of the penning of the "Star
Spangled Banner." The words to the
song were written nearly 200 years ago by Francis Scott Key. The
entire school participated in one of our country's most patriotic
customs: singing the National Anthem.

- Cube Activity
At Whitehall Elementary, Mrs. Keffer's third grade
students are exploring with the connecting cubes
to determine how many cubes they need to make a hundred.
With the cube activity, the students had to count
out 100 cubes using their background knowledge. Once
the students determined they had 100 cubes, they
had to defend their answers.

- Penny Activity
Mrs. Keffer's third grade students at Whitehall
Elementary recently engaged in a reading extension
activity from the story, "Max Malone Makes a
Million." The students listened to a poem about
a penny and then had to create their own pictures
using pennies. The students used the pennies to create
different round objects from wheels on a car to the
center of a flower.

- Balloon Lady
At Whitehall Elementary, Mrs. Kanar, a balloon
artist, shared her occupation with Mrs. Keffer's
third grade class to demonstrate that balloons are
not always what they seem. Her presentation was an
extension to the students' reading story, " Opt:
An Illusionary Tale" to demonstrate that anyone
can create many fascinating objects with balloons
if they practice and use their imagination. She also
encouraged the students to believe in their dreams
and to think of an occupation they would enjoy doing
when they grow up and enter the work force.

- Purple Day
What a way to celebrate Purple Day! After learning
how to read and identify the color purple, kindergarten
students at Paynter Elementary in Mrs. Mervos' class
enjoyed a brand new purple-iced smiley face cookie
from Eat n' Park. Purple is the sixth color that
the children have celebrated and the official school
color of the Baldwin Highlanders.

- Building a Rainbow
Whitehall PTA sponsored the program "Building
a Rainbow: Bullyng Prevention" for the students
of Whitehall Elementary. This program is designed
to communicate a zero-tolerance message regarding
bullying, teasing, and other negative behaviors to
young students in the context of a "pop-rock
concert."

A rainbow of colors could be seen at Paynter Elementary
as the kindergarten students learn their colors.
Each day, students and staff were encouraged to wear
a different hue to help reinforce that day’s

At Whitehall Elementary, Mrs. Larson's fourth
grade students spent a busy day wrapping up the first
eight days of the new math series. They enjoyed all
of the hands-on activities the "Investigation" portion
of the series provided. Students played various games
involving money and number values.

- Women Basketball Make Health Kits
Several members
of the Baldwin Women Basketball team gathered
during open gym to make health kits for victims
of Hurricane Katrina. The kits contain items
which will provide basic necessities to people
who have been forced to leave their homes.

- Take Charge of Education Program
Baldwin High School
Principal, Dr. Todd Keruskin accepted a check
for $593.40 from Target and the Take Charge
of Education Program. This donation was the
result of the program's September 2005 donations
designated for Baldwin High School. Through
this program, Target donates an amount equal
to 1% (Target Visa and Target Card) purchases
made at Target and Target.com,
and 1/2% of Target Visa purchases made elsewhere,
to the eligible kindergarten through twelfth
grade school of a shopper's choice.
Target is

- Anti-Bullying Program
One of the highlights of the Anti-bully Week at
Paynter Elementary was the assembly featuring Alabaster
Empowering Assemblies. The assembly, led by Social
Worker Mark Lepore, included an educational session
delivered by the Anti-bully Committee consisting
of volunteer teachers and other staff members. Pre-tests
and post-tests were administered to a sample of the
student population. The assembly will be followed
up by classroom presentations made to all students.
Students reported having a great time while learning
about a serious topic. The presentation by Alabaster
was one way that the faculty and students at Paynter
attempt to make the school a safe and fun learning
environment for everyone.

- Katrina Fund
As a part of Anti-Bullying
Week, from September 12 - 23, Whitehall Elementary
School had a dollar drive for the victims of
Hurricane Katrina. The students and staff were
able to donate $1,002.55 to the American Red
Cross. This service project taught the students
the benefits of working together as a team
in order to help others.

- Pizza Party for New Students
At Harrison Middle School, a New Students Workshop
was held to welcome all sixth, seventh, and eighth
grade students who are new to the Baldwin-Whitehall
School District for the 2005-06 school year. Approximately
45 students attended the workshops, where Ms. Williams,
school Social Worker, and Mrs. Leadbitter, Guidance
Counselor, spoke about Harrison Middle School, discussed
adjustment issues, and answered questions regarding
scheduling, extra-curricular activities, and student
ID. Students were treated to pizza, as well as a
wide variety of snacks. All students who attended
the workshops received an official Baldwin-Whitehall
water bottle to promote school pride.

- Assistant Principal for the Day
McAnnulty Elementary student, Gareth Allegrucci
dressed the part of a principal on picture day, so,
he served as Honorary Assistant Principal during
his recess and part of his lunch time. Gareth worked
with his principal, Mr. McFadden, entering data into
the computer and assisted his peers at lunch time.
Gareth has a bright future ahead of him.

- Paynter Dare Officer
The DARE program
teaches children how to recognize and resist
the pressures that may influence them to experiment
with drugs and alcohol. Since 70-90% of all
crimes are drug related, Baldwin DARE officer,
Officer Gazzo's job at Paynter Elementary is
a very important one.
