On November 20 - 24, the Baldwin
High School Highlander Marching Band traveled to
New York City to perform in the 80th Annual Macy's
Thanksgiving Day Parade. The band was one of only
six high school bands selected to perform in this
year's parade. They were the official representative
of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The band performed
for over two million people watching the parade
live along the streets of New York City and over
70 million people watching on CBS and NBC.
Besides the parade, the band enjoyed the sights
of New York City including Time Square, Rockefeller
Center, The Statue of Liberty, Chinatown, The
Radio City Christmas Spectacular, The Disney Musical
"Mary Poppins", "The Blue Man Group"
and a whole lot more. Congratulations to the band,
staff and chaperones for making this once in a
lifetime opportunity such a success!!!!!

- Musical Instruments
The Paynter students in Mrs. Knerr's third grade
class created musical instruments for a Science
project. Each instrument had to produce 8 different
pitches, as well as change its volume. Each student
played his/her instrument for the class, read his/her
report, and answered any questions about the instrument-making
process. Overall, the students really enjoyed this
activity!

- Omelettes
Paynter students in Mrs. Vu’s morning and
afternoon Extended Day Kindergartens made cheese
omelettes and toast. Reading series letter people,
Mr. O and Miss T, came for a visit to reinforce
the “o” and “t” sounds.
The children were excited to crack the eggs into
a bowl, mix the eggs, and butter their own toast.
All agreed the omelettes were tasty!

- Food Drive
For bringing in the most items during the canned
food drive in November, Mrs. Smocer’s Afternoon
Kindergarten at Paynter was rewarded with a free
class period in the gym. The children enjoyed bouncing
a ball on the parachute as they shook it and loved
lifting the parachute up high to take turns running
underneath. Thank you to students in all classes
who sent in goods to replenish the Baldwin Food
Pantry. Your generosity is appreciated.

- Santa Shop
Paynter students had the opportunity to do some
holiday shopping for friends and family at the Santa
Shop. Thanks to hard work from the PTA committee,
Paynter’s auditorium was festively decorated,
and the children enjoyed their shopping experience.
Parent helpers assisted students in choosing just
the right gifts. While classes waited their turn,
they decorated wooden ornaments that adorned a tree
for all to see. The students and staff thank all
of the PTA members who volunteered their time to
make this year’s Santa Shop very successful.

- Pen Pals
Over the course of the last few weeks in Paynter
Elementary, Mrs. Cantwell’s first grade class
and Mrs. Myers’ second grade class had been
writing pen pal letters to each other. The pen pal
program was led by their student teachers, Miss
Mitruski and Miss Martin. The students practiced
their letter writing skills and really enjoyed getting
to know each other. There was such a positive response
that Miss Mitruski and Miss Martin organized a pen
pal party so the children could finally meet each
other. Together, the pen pals made a reindeer snack
and had a chance to talk in person. The pen pal
experience was deliciously successful!

- Griener’s Greats
Griener’s Greats at McAnnulty love to practice
all academic skills during learning center time.
Every afternoon, these second grade students have
a choice of about a dozen centers to visit. Center
activities include word study, spelling, fiction
and non-fiction reading, sight word practice, writing,
listening, math activities, basic fact practice,
computers, and a seasonal area that encompasses
many areas of learning. Once students have selected
a center, they may choose from several activities.
They practice more than just reading, writing, and
arithmetic, as they become responsible and independent
learners. During this thirty minute period, Mrs.
Griener can pull small groups for reinforcement,
enrichment, or make-up work. Mrs. Walsh, our district
math coach, has also visited at this time to pull
a small group of children for math enrichment. Way
to work, Griener’s Greats!
