Ms. Wolf's third graders at Paynter are experts
in measuring length! As a culminating activity to
their "Paces to Feet" unit, the students
circulated through various stations to put their
measurement skills to use! The students discovered
how far they can blow a pattern block and do a standing
jump. They also found benchmarks on their bodies
for 1 inch, 6 inches, and a foot. Lastly, the class
compared the length of different objects around
the room.

- Griener’s Greats
Griener’s Greats in McAnnulty have been
working very hard in literacy workshops. There are
five different workshops entitled; word study, fiction,
non-fiction, poetry, and writing. Students are given
a short assignment that they must do. Then they
have a choice of three to four more activities to
complete. Students enjoy working together with a
small team while developing reading and writing
skills. Students also improve their decision making
skills, responsibility, and independence as learners.
While students are actively engaged in meaningful
tasks, Mrs. Griener, their classroom teacher, can
pull small groups of students for differentiated
instruction. Griener's Greats truly are great workers
in literacy workshop!

- Snowman
The kindergarten
and first grade English Language Learners
at McAnnulty memorized a poem about a snowman.
They constructed beautiful snowmen of their
own to match the words of the poem and then
presented their work to two second grade classes.
They learned new vocabulary, practiced choral
reading, perfected presentation skills, and
had some winter fun!

- World of Robots
The students at McAnnulty were introduced to the
World of Robots. Jack Burreas from Burreas Research
brought several robots to share with the kids. The
interactive program provided great education about
the helpfulness of robots and even showed one robot
perform a cartwheel!.

- Asset Science
As part of the ASSET Changes module, students
in Mrs. Myers’ second grade at Paynter used
what they already knew about evaporation and condensation
to predict what would happen to a cup of cold water
and a cup of hot water being covered with a clear
lid. Then they wrote their observations in their
science notebooks.

- Powerpoint
What is the difference between a line and a ray?
Mr. Niecgorski’s fifth grade students know.
They have been working hard on completing their
PowerPoint presentations of geometry terms. In addition
to having the correct definition, each student was
expected to show an example of the term, and then
add backgrounds, slide transitions, and summary
questions for the class to answer as it was presented
aloud.

- Dinosaur Assembly
Paynter Elementary students enjoyed an interesting
assembly sponsored by the PTA. For Kindergarten,
First and Second grades, “Sidney” and
“Professor” from the Carnegie Museum
of Pittsburgh, showed the students fossils, discussed
how they’re formed, and explained the differences
between herbivores and carnivores. Third, Fourth
and Fifth grades also had a chance to see fossilized
dinosaur bones and eggs along with a time line to
help put into perspective how very long ago dinosaurs
lived.

- Seton LaSalle High School’s International
Club
Seton LaSalle High School’s International
Club, sponsored by teacher Mrs. Pat Garritan, visited
Paynter Elementary. Approximately 70 ESL students
enjoyed stories, a snack, and made a Valentine card.
Through a bake sale, a candy-in-a-jar guessing game,
and a dress down day, the International Club students
raised enough money to purchase a new book for each
ESL child to keep and take home.
