The students in Mrs. Keffer's third grade classroom
are actively engaged in their Investigations lesson
on determining the weights of fruits and vegatables
using a pan balance. The students had to use unifix
cubes to balance the scales to determine the weight.
After completing the lesson, the students had to
predict if the fruits and vegetables would gain or
lose weight based on their background knowledge.
During the following lesson, the students reweighed
the fruits and vegetables and determined the difference
between the two weights.

school pride as a part of the Paynter Community through

BHS
and Public Libraries Collaboration
The
members of the public libraries discussed with
Baldwin High School English teachers the following
ways in which the public libraries and the
high school library can work collaboratively
to meet the educational needs of the students
within the community.
Students can access the POWER Library
from home via the Internet, using their
library card. The POWER Library allows
students to access thousands of full text
periodical articles, newspapers, a major
encyclopedia, plus photographs, pictures,
charts, maps, and reference materials.
An interactive calendar has been set up
online by the community libraries for teachers
to post school assignments in which the
public libraries may assist in providing
Joyce Chiappetta (Paynter
Community Library), Robyn Hammer-Clarey (Whitehall
Public Library), Licia Slimon (Whitehall Public
Library), Kristin Berniston (Paynter Community
Library), and Brigetta Hannah (BHS Library
Media Specialist).
books and other resources. Now students
and libraries will know objectives, deadlines, necessary
materials, and requirements at the click of a button.
Together, the school and the local
libraries want a library media program that is fully
integrated into the instructional program of the
school where teachers, students, and all library
media specialists become partners in learning. However,
remote access to electronic resources via the public
libraries can not occur unless a student has a library
card. The English teachers and high school library
media specialist encourage parents to obtain a library
card for the student in order to broaden student
access to library resources.

- Sinking & Floating
“First we calibrated, then we weighed.” Those
are the steps that Mrs. Larson’s fourth grade
students took when they first discovered spring scales.
Students used bobby pins as a gram weight. With each
pin they added, they created a line on their scale.
Once their scales were calibrated they were able
to weigh their objects. Because spring scales aren’t
the most accurate, they weighed each object three
times and then found the mean, median, and mode of
each. This activity was from the Asset Sinking and
Floating module.

- Hugs Not Drugs Day
During October 23 – 27,
McAnnulty celebrated Red Ribbon Week, a national
campaign promoting a healthy drug-free life.
Of the many activities, students participated
in “Hugs not Drugs” day. Students
brought a stuffed animal to school to demonstrate
this idea. Each classroom discussed the importance
of living a happy and healthy life where hugs
are better than drugs. This is a fun way for
the students to make that vital connection.
Let’s all support this campaign in our
own homes.
