At Paynter Elementary, Mrs. Hoover's and Mrs. Gorham’s
classes joined together for a Thanksgiving activity.
Following the reading of the book Twas the Night Before
Thanksgiving, they each assembled a “turkey” using
cookies, candies, and chocolate icing as “glue." The
students learned about this American holiday, customs,
and gained new vocabulary.

- Gingerbread House
At Whitehall Elementary, Mrs. Renee Christman's
students created a gingerbread model of their school
and submitted it to the third annual PPG Gingerbread
House Competition. The eight students first went outside
to sketch the front of their school building, then
made a paper model to use as patterns. The students
constructed the walls and roof with the gingerbread
pieces and lots of Royal Icing. The students attached
Smarties on the roof and Nerds outlining the windows.
Other decorations included Twinkie school buses, Ice
Blue Mints for the glass block windows, gum doors,
Hershey bar steps, coconut grass, and a sign made out
of alphabet pasta. Of course, there was plenty of left
over candy to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth. This
delectable creation won third place in the competition.
The gingerbread "Whitehall School" will be
displayed at Two PPG Place downtown from November 18
to January 6.

- ESL Holiday Visit
Twice yearly the International Club from Seton LaSalle
High School and their teacher, Pat Garritan, comes
to visit the English Language Learner (ELL) students
of Paynter Elementary. This year, this group did something
very special. These young adults raised money through
bake sales and other fundraisers which enabled them
to purchase gifts for all of Paynter’s ELL students.
During the holiday visit the students from Seton
LaSalle read books with the younger students to help
them learn about the many different holidays celebrate
at this time of year. After the readings, the students
discussed the holiday they had read about, created
a decoration, and told the group about something new
they learned. They finished their get-together with
cookies, milk, and gifts. Every Paynter ELL student
recieved a new hat and gloves from the Seton LaSalle
students. The students enjoyed seeing their 'old' friends
and meeting new ones. The children were thrilled at
recieving a gift and are looking forward to their spring
visit.

- Teen Leadership Program
As part of Teen Leadership - Diversity Council,
Baldwin High School conducted a one day seminar in
the library with the topic of discussion "Holiday
Celebrations – Celebrating All." There were
forty students from various school districts across
Allegheny County in attendance. Students in the group
were given information on different religions which
included Sikh, Islam, Jewish, and Christianity. They
learned about the history of the religion, places of
worship, holidays and holy days, and traditions and
then compiled questions. At the conclusion of the information
session, there was an open panel comprised of adults
who participated in these various religions.

- Set The Table
The Baldwin High School PTSA supported high school
ELL (English Language Learners) teacher, Holly Niemi,
in an ELL curriculum unit. Mrs. Niemi is one of five
teachers at the high school who received a monetary
grant from the PTSA. The PTSA's goal in the 2005-2006
teacher grants is to contribute to various worthwhile
and diverse projects that benefit student groups. This
particular project was entitled, "Set the Table." The
generosity of the PTSA enabled beginning ELL students
to extend what they have learned from the text and
to share in authentic American food traditions and
customs.
