he/she can buy lunch in the cafeteria. Depending on your
income, you may qualify for reduced price lunches or free
lunches, but you must complete an application form. |

will pick your child up near your home and bring him/her

| What
is a detention? |
| All
Schools |
A detention is a punishment
given when your child has broken school or school district
rules. He/she may be told to "serve a detention." In
this case, he/she will have to report to the office or
a specific classroom for a period of time after school,
during school or on Saturday. Your child will not be able
to participate in class or after school activities at this
time. However, your child is still responsible for the
class work he/she has not completed. You will be notified
of the rules that your child has broken and the consequences. |

is a suspension? |

If your child has broken
school rules on more than one occasion, he/she may be suspended
from school for a period of time. This means that your
child cannot attend classes during that time or participate
in any after school activities. You will be notified of
your child's actions and the consequences. |

receive a school calendar that shows when there is no school
and when there are early dismissals. Early dismissals are
scheduled 2 - 3 times a year for Parent-Teacher Conferences
and Open House. |

hour delays can occur due to winter weather. Cancellations
may occur for the same reason. Listen to the radio or television

Your
child's teacher will tell your child what is expected each
day. He/she may be told to do some extra math or study
spelling words each day. Your child should also try to
read other books or stories each evening. |

Each
of your child's teachers will assign homework. Your child
may be told to study for a test, complete a special project,
or practice math facts. Homework assignments often account
for part of a grade, so your child should work carefully
on homework each evening. |

to complete or to understand how to do the homework.
Your child may also come to the SHIM
After School Homework Club located at 1450 Maple Drive in the Prospect Park
Apartments. Tutors are available on Mondays, Tuesdays,
Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 5 P.M. |

child will have an ESL teacher (English as a Second Language).
He/she will be learning English in this classroom for several
hours each week. The ESL teacher may be able to help your
child with some of his/her other subjects as well. |

If you need an interpreter, you may make a request by phone
or in writing. Parents are encouraged to attend parent/teacher

child will receive a report card every 9 weeks. Additionally,
your child may receive a home notice (Interim) alerting
you to his/her progress half way through each nine week

the classmates may speak your native language while others

are many clubs and activities available after school. However,
there is no bus transportation available to take your child
back home. You will need to arrange a safe method for your

should ask the teacher if the nurse is available for him/her
to see. You must complete a Health History/Emergency card

appointments may be scheduled during the day. Your child
will need a written request from you stating the time and
reason for the early dismissal from school. If time permits,
you may bring your child back to school after the appointment. |

should my child do if he/she feels threatened by someone? |

your child should tell that person how he/she feels.
Secondly, if that person continues to behave in a way
that makes your child feel uncomfortable, he/she should
tell a teacher, guidance counselor, social worker, or
principal. These people will take appropriate actions. |
