Getting Around the Schools/ School Rules
How will my child find his/her way to the classroom?
Elementary Schools Your child's teacher will walk with him/her to the cafeteria, gym, and other classrooms. New classmates will help, too.
Harrison Middle School Teachers are available in the hallways. Other children will also help your child. There is a school map in the Student Agenda.
Baldwin High School Teachers are available in the hallways. Your child will also have a map of the school.
Will my child be able to leave the classroom during the day to go to the restroom or make a phone call?
All Schools Your child will need to ask the teacher for permission during class time to use the restroom. Phone calls are only permitted in an emergency situation.
What rules does my child have to follow?
Elementary Schools Guidelines and rules will be sent home from the school, and additional information will be sent home by the classroom teacher. In addition to these guidelines, the students will be given a Student Handbook that explains school procedures and policies.
Harrison Middle School There is a Student Handbook that explains school procedures and rules, as well as cafeteria procedures, and the responsibilities of students in school and on the bus.

Where will my child eat lunch? Should I send food with my child or will there be food available at the school?
All Schools Your child will eat lunch in the school cafeteria. You may send lunch from home or he/she can buy lunch in the cafeteria. Depending on your income, you may qualify for reduced price lunches or free lunches, but you must complete an application form.
How will my child get to and from school each day?
All Schools Your child may ride the school bus, be driven to school or walk. The school bus will pick your child up near your home and bring him/her back after school.
What items does my child need to bring to school?
Elementary Schools Your child will need a book bag, a pencil box….
Harrison Middle School Your child will need a backpack, notebooks, agenda, pencils and pens, and clothes for physical education class.
Baldwin High School Your child will need a backpack, school supplies such as pencils and pens, clothes for physical education class.
What is a detention?
All Schools A detention is a punishment given when your child has broken school or school district rules. He/she may be told to "serve a detention." In this case, he/she will have to report to the office or a specific classroom for a period of time after school, during school or on Saturday. Your child will not be able to participate in class or after school activities at this time. However, your child is still responsible for the class work he/she has not completed. You will be notified of the rules that your child has broken and the consequences.
What is a suspension?
All Schools If your child has broken school rules on more than one occasion, he/she may be suspended from school for a period of time. This means that your child cannot attend classes during that time or participate in any after school activities. You will be notified of your child's actions and the consequences.
When does the school day begin and end?
Elementary Schools 8:45 A.M. to 3:45 P.M.
Harrison Middle School 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
Baldwin High School 7:45 A.M. to 2:25 P.M.
How will I know when school is in session? When there are holidays from school? What and when are early dismissals?
All Schools Students receive a school calendar that shows when there is no school and when there are early dismissals. Early dismissals are scheduled 2 - 3 times a year for Parent-Teacher Conferences and Open House.
Is school ever cancelled for weather or other emergencies?
All Schools Two hour delays can occur due to winter weather. Cancellations may occur for the same reason. Listen to the radio or television for announcements.
Education
How many teachers will my child have?
Elementary Schools Your child will have the same classroom teacher for most of his/her subjects, as well as an ESL teacher (English as a Second Language), and other teachers for special subjects such as physical education, art, and music.
Harrison Middle School Your child will have a Homebase teacher, an ESL teacher (English as a Second Language Teacher), and other teachers for all subject areas (Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Music, Art, etc.).
Baldwin High School Your child will have a different teacher for each subject.
What subjects will my child learn?
Elementary Schools ESL (English as a Second Language), Language Arts (Reading, English, and Spelling), Math, Health, Social Studies, Science, Art, Music, Computer skills, and Physical Education.
Harrison Middle School Math, Science, Language Arts (English, Spelling, Reading, Grammar), Social Studies, Study Skills, Health, Art, Music, Physical Education, Family and Consumer Science, Introduction to Foreign Languages (8TH grade only)

What kind of homework assignments will my child have?
Elementary Schools Your child's teacher will tell your child what is expected each day. He/she may be told to do some extra math or study spelling words each day. Your child should also try to read other books or stories each evening.

Each of your child's teachers will assign homework. Your child may be told to study for a test, complete a special project, or practice math facts. Homework assignments often account for part of a grade, so your child should work carefully on homework each evening.
Who can help my child with homework?
All Schools Your child should tell the teacher when he/she is unable to complete or to understand how to do the homework. Your child may also come to the SHIM After School Homework Club located at 1450 Maple Drive in the Prospect Park Apartments. Tutors are available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 5 P.M.
Who will teach my child English?
All Schools Your child will have an ESL teacher (English as a Second Language). He/she will be learning English in this classroom for several hours each week. The ESL teacher may be able to help your child with some of his/her other subjects as well.
How can I contact my child's teacher?
All Schools You may call the school and ask to speak to your child's teacher. If you need an interpreter, you may make a request by phone or in writing. Parents are encouraged to attend parent/teacher conferences, Open House visits, or special events such as concerts and award ceremonies.
How will I know what my child's grades are in each subject?
All Schools Your child will receive a report card every 9 weeks. Additionally, your child may receive a home notice (Interim) alerting you to his/her progress half way through each nine week grading period. Also you can also review your child's grades online, click for more information. The grading scale may be different than in your native country:
A 93%-100% B 83%-92%
C 70%-82% D 60%-69%
F 0% - 59% ***This is a failing grade
Social/ Cultural
What should my child wear to school each day? What should my child wear to gym class?
All Schools Your child should wear comfortable clothing to school each day.
Elementary Schools Your child may not wear T-shirts or other clothing that carry obscene or profane messages, or have messages promoting drugs or alcohol. Your child should not wear hats, hoods, or other headwear except for medical or religious reasons.

Provocative clothing such as spandex or other tight fitting apparel, tank tops, halter tops, bare chests or midriffs, or half-shirts are not permitted. Your child will need special clothing to participate in physical education classes.
How will my child be able to make new friends at school?
All Schools Your child's teachers, social worker, and guidance counselor will introduce your child to his/her classmates. Some of the classmates may speak your native language while others will communicate with your child in English. They will try to help your child become familiar with the new school.
What activities can my child participate in at school?
All Schools There are many clubs and activities available after school. However, there is no bus transportation available to take your child back home. You will need to arrange a safe method for your child to return home if he/she participates in these activities.
What should my child do if he/she does not feel well while at school?
All Schools If your child does not feel well during school time, he/she should ask the teacher if the nurse is available for him/her to see. You must complete a Health History/Emergency card each year with telephone numbers where you can be reached if there is an emergency during the school day.
If your child is not feeling well before the school day begins:
Elementary Schools You must call the school and report the absence to the school secretary. When he/she returns, your child must bring a note from you stating the reason that he/she was absent.

Am I permitted to schedule a doctor or dentist appointment during the school day for my child?
All Schools Such appointments may be scheduled during the day. Your child will need a written request from you stating the time and reason for the early dismissal from school. If time permits, you may bring your child back to school after the appointment.
What should my child do if he/she feels threatened by someone?
All Schools First, your child should tell that person how he/she feels. Secondly, if that person continues to behave in a way that makes your child feel uncomfortable, he/she should tell a teacher, guidance counselor, social worker, or principal. These people will take appropriate actions.
