Elementary Honors Orchestra

The area’s First Annual Elementary Honors Orchestra Festival was held at Paynter Elementary in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District on April 18, 2008. The festival gave students a unique opportunity to showcase their talent and meet others from neighboring school districts. Participating districts included Baldwin-Whitehall, Mt. Lebanon, and Quaker Valley. The fifty-six participating students were nominated by their respective orchestra instructors after completing a number of auditions.

Students enjoyed an entire day of activities including a provided lunch, a catered banquet dinner and a performance by a Duquesne University String Quartet. The day ended in the auditorium with an outstanding concert performance by participating students. The young musicians performed challenging selections with enthusiasm and vigor. The concert was captured on a CD recording arranged by festival organizer, Alan Booth.

Before the final festival performance, several parents of participants were heard commenting on what an excellent opportunity this was for their children. Baldwin-Whitehall is pleased with the success of the festival and plans to host it again in April 2009. Significant growth of the event is anticipated in the years to come.
