The Baldwin-Whitehall School District has joined a
statewide public outreach campaign designed to promote
the accomplishments, accountability and value of
Pennsylvania's public schools.

National Merit Winners
The 2003 National Merit Scholarship competition began when juniors took the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) in October 2001. Of the 1.2 million students in 20,000 high schools in the U.S. who took the test, 50,000 were identified as "high-scorers." 16,000 of the high-scorers went on to become Semifinalists; the others were named as Commended Students. Semifinalists are the highest scoring students in each state and represent the top one percent of all seniors. The Semifinalists advance to the Finalist level of competition, where they must meet certain requirements. About 90% or 15,000 students will become Finalists, and, of those, 8,000 will become Merit Scholarship winners. Finalists will be named in February and scholarship winners will be named from April to July. Baldwin High School seniors, Laura Berard, Debra Grden, Catherine Grubb, Emily Matthews, and PJ (Peter) Wallace have been named as National Merit Commended Students and Nicole Zevola has been named as a National Merit Semifinalist and advanced to the Finalist level of the competition. Nicole was notified in February that she has been named as a National Merit Finalist.
