Harrison Middle School students took part in the Future Problem Solving Bowl at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit in February. Twenty-eight teams participated in each bowl.
Students researched the topic, Nanotechnology, and completed a written packet using the six-step problem-solving process to solve a given scenario on Nanotechnology in the year 2033. Part of the process included identifying challenges, selecting an underlying problem, producing solution ideas, and generating and selecting criteria for a solution.

The written packet of the first place winning team advanced to the state level of competition. The first place team consisted of sixth grade students Sarah Wells, Andrea Weigand, Nikola Teslovich, and David Sedlock. The third place winning team members were Matt Rutledge, Matt Wagner, Tyler Hipchen, and Amanda Smith.

Harrison Middle School Forensics Team Results

The Harrison Middle School Forensic Team participated in its first competition, January 25, at St. Louise de Marillac School. Nineteen members of Harrison's Forensic Team participated. The team has a total of 35 members. At this level, competition is not mandatory. A total of 13 first-place ribbons, six second-place ribbons and seven third-place ribbons were won. All 19 team members won an award in both rounds.

PA All-State Chorus
Baldwin High School sophomore, Connor Nowalk received the honors of first chair acceptance into Pennsylvania All-State Chorus. After having to memorize a dozen very difficult choral pieces, he auditioned by singing 2 Latin songs. On April 9th-11th, 2003, Connor will be traveling to Hershey, PA to sing with some of the most talented musicians in the state.

HMS's Math Counts Tournatment Results

Students from Harrison Middle School took part in the Mathcounts Tournament held January 29 at Robert Morris University, Moon Campus. Patrick Devlin, David Dgien, Brandon Hahn, Diana Huang, and Emily Zern were recognized for their achievement of Top Ten Scorers in the tournament. In addition, Emily Zern, Patrick Devlin, Keri Hartman, and George Davis were on the first place winning team. Patrick Devlin earned an individual third place. Moon Area Middle School hosted the tournament and participants included students from Moon, Baldwin-Whitehall, Peters Township, and South Fayette school districts.

FBLA Regional Conference
 

The Baldwin High School Future Business Leaders of America recently participated in the FBLA Regional Conference. First through fourth place was earned by twenty-six Baldwin students in the competition. These students are guaranteed a chance to compete at the State Leadership Workshop April 6-9, 2003.

Steel Center Extra Effort Award Recipients

Brian Yost, a 12th grade student at Baldwin High School, was honored at Steel Center Area Vocational Technical School with the Extra Effort Award in Electrical Construction. Junior Bob Siegwarth received the Extra Effort Award in Protective Services. Senior Nicole Shannon and junior Hayley Paige Schonkwiler received the Extra Effort Award in Cosmetology. Each quarter, Steel Center instructors select students who demonstrates outstanding, work ethics, attendance, and dependability.

Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Competition
A team of students from Baldwin High School took part in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) competition held at Chartiers Valley High School in February. Freshman Amanda Kelly earned second place for her physic project, Does Bridge Design Affect Stress Durability?. Junior Maura Nowalk earned second place for her microbiology project, Preventing Mold Growth on Surfaces. Freshman Chris Rampolla was awarded a first place and a Director's Award for his microbiology project, A Comparative Study of Measures Used to Combat Bacterial Growth.

All regional first place winners go to Penn State University, Main Campus, to compete at the state level in May 2003.

Science Bowl Winners
The Science Bowl Competition, sponsored by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Gifted Education Program, took place on January 8, 2003, at the Carnegie Science Center. There are two divisions grades 4-5 and grades 6-8. Students answer questions, while involved in various activities at the center. There were 102 teams present on that day.

Baldwin-Whitehall sent 3 teams of students in grades 4-5 from Whitehall and Paynter Elementary Schools and a team from Harrison Middle School. The team from Paynter Elementary won second place in their division. The team members are fifth grade student Vincent Palmieri and fourth grade students Neil Isler, Michelle Szemanski, and Rachael Zeitler. The team from Harrison, with seventh grade students David Dgien and Tara Kavanaugh won second place for their division.

Baldwin High School Early Graduates

Dante Abbondanza, Jennifer Balkovec, Kristen Barr, Laura Berard, Cailey Breneman, Lauren Evans, Caitlin Farley, Marc Gold, Valerie Haberman, Misty Hovanec, Christina Kunz, Monique Mackay, Ashley McDonough, Lindsay Miller, Lea Munizza, Laura Mushenheim, Amra Mutilovic, Julie Nowak, Maria Raffaele, Kristian Sherman, Brittany Strobel, and Haylee Thomas achieved the requirements necessary for early graduation from Baldwin High School. The graduates were recognized at a ceremony on January 23 and will take part in the June commencement with the entire Class of 2003.

Baldwin-Whitehall Council of PTAs Reflection
SIGNS OF COURAGE Top Honors
The theme for the 2002-2003 National PTA Reflections Program is SIGNS OF COURAGE. This year, seventy-two Baldwin-Whitehall School District students participated in the PTA Council level of judging, with a total of eighty-three entries. Qualified local area judges conducted the judging of all the entries on artistic merit, creativity, and interpretation of the theme.
 
All Baldwin-Whitehall Council of PTAs winning entries will be forwarded to the District 10 PTA level of Judging. This level includes all participating PTA schools within Allegheny County. The top five entries in each category at the District 10 level will then proceed to the Pennsylvania State PTA level of judging. The top winners at the state level will proceed to the National PTA for final judging.

District 10 winners will be announced in March. These students will be recognized at the District 10 Spring Conference and Reflections luncheon in April at Crown Royce Plaza Hotel.

Baldwin Marching Band invited to
2003 Governor Inaugural Parade

Pennsylvania Governor Elect Edward G. Rendell has invited Baldwin High School Marching Band to represent Allegheny County in the 2003 Inaugural Parade. The parade is scheduled for January 21, 2003 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and will showcase various elements from all 67 counties in Pennsylvania, including 25 of the top marching bands from across the State.
