This month the character attribute
is Courage. January will be Friendship, February
will be Work, March will be Self-Discipline, and
April and May will be Integrity.
Each theme is introduced during the
morning news. The concept is further explained as
the teachers follow up with activities that help
students understand how to demonstrate the attribute.
This year we will be using the videos from PBS Kids,
Adventures from the Book of Virtues. These videos
have been an outstanding resource in making these
character attributes more easily understood by children.
Another activity is the story time with the principals.
This affords the principals the opportunity to see
and talk with students about the story and how it
represents the attribute. After several opportunities
to learn about the month’s attribute, each
class selects up to three students who represent
that attribute. Those students receive a certificate
and are photographed for the lobby bulletin board
display. We are proud of our students and their efforts
to learn and grow in character.

- October Happygrams
Whitehall Elementary School has resumed
its character education program for the 2005-2006
school year. For September and October the monthly
core value was cooperation. Each month, a theme is
introduced during the morning news. The concept is
further explained and reinforced throughout the month.
At the end of each month, teachers selects two students
from each class who represent that attribute. Students
are awarded a Happy Gram by the Principals which
includes a cookie, a recognition certificate, and
a pencil. Students are photographed for the office
bulletin board and their pictures are posted on the
web. Students are recognized by the Principals for
the positive things they are doing at Whitehall School.
Congratulations to all the students who were awarded
an October Happy Gram. We are proud of their hard
work and efforts!

Citizenship - Students of the Week
The Student of the Week
program at J. E. Harrison Middle School is run by
the Positive Communication Committee. Each week the
10 Core Teams, four in sixth grade, three in seventh
grade and three in eighth grade, plus the Physical
Education Team, the Music Team and the Encore Team
nominate students to be Students of the Week. These
students possess a positive character trait. The
traits are chosen from those studied during Homebase
activities. Each Student of the Week will have a
congratulatory letter sent home to their parents
or guardians, will have a candy bar and a certificate
delivered to their homebase, and will have their
name displayed in the library with the other chosen
students. Students can be chosen as Student of the
Week only once each school year.

- I Wonder Why
Paynter Elementary students participated
in the 2005 PTA Reflections Program. This annual
arts recognition and achievement program for students
is sponsored by the National PTA. The program offers
students the opportunity to create works of art for
fun and recognition in four areas: visual arts, musical
composition, literature, and photography. This year's
theme is "I Wonder Why." Judging begins
at the local level and then continues on to Council,
District, State, and National. The winning entries
from Paynter Elementary will now continue onward
for judging at the Council level. Retired teacher,
Mrs. Kathy Wright and PTA parent volunteers Mrs.
Pacella and Mrs. Costantino helped to make this year's
program at Paynter a huge success.
