Often the destructive ideas in our world, like white supremacy, are articulated by anonymous profiles on the internet. What if students could hear from someone in real life who knows how harmful those ideologies are because he used to believe them himself?
On September 27th The Baldwin-Whitehall chapter of the LIGHT Education Initiative hosted reformed white supremacist/skinhead and Holocaust denier Tony McAleer. Students viewed McAleer’s movie A Cure for Hate, which chronicles his journey out of white supremacy and his tour of the extermination camps at Auschwitz I and II (Birkenau). After the viewing, Tony and his director participated in a discussion and question-and-answer session with the students.
