On July 20, 2024, members of the Fly Like A Girl (FLAG) cohorts were given an exclusive look behind the scenes at Kennywood Park's highly anticipated drone show. The visit offered a rare glimpse into the intricate setup of the 300-drone preflight grid and the sophisticated software that powers the entire spectacle. The precision and coordination required for such a large-scale event were on full display, highlighting the complexity of orchestrating a seamless aerial performance.

During the tour, the group engaged with the operations manager of Firefly Drones, the company responsible for the show, who provided valuable insights into the world of drone piloting. It became evident that being a drone pilot demands not only technical expertise but also a keen sense of responsibility and meticulous attention to detail. The behind-the-scenes access deepened the group’s appreciation for the extensive work and planning involved in executing a flawless drone show.

As the evening culminated in a dazzling display of lights, the group enjoyed prime viewing spots, making the experience even more memorable. Kennywood Park’s generosity in offering this unique opportunity allowed the FLAG members to gain a profound understanding of the blend of collaboration, technology, and creativity required to produce such events. The experience underscored the burgeoning potential of drone technology, leaving participants inspired by the possibilities in this rapidly evolving field.

But the excitement didn’t stop there. The cohort also had the incredible opportunity to visit PNC Park for an exclusive meet-and-greet with the team from Sky Elements Drone Shows, finalists on the current season of America's Got Talent. The Sky Elements team provided a pre-show interview, answering questions on topics ranging from equipment specs and programming to setup and design. The group even toured the control room that was coordinating with the drone team for the production and ran into a Baldwin grad!

Despite a heavy rainstorm that delayed the game, the Sky Elements team ensured the show went on. They meticulously hand-dried all 300 drones and their batteries, demonstrating their dedication to delivering an amazing performance. Senior Molly Fircak shared, "It was very interesting to see the precise setup required for the drone shows. It was also interesting to see how similar and different setups were across each company."

Dr. Peretin would like to express her heartfelt thanks to everyone who made it possible for our students and their families to have these enriching opportunities to expand their knowledge and connect with professionals in the drone field.
