"Save the Last Word for Me" Discussion

The tenth-grade Honors English students in Mrs. Schulte's classes took part in a student-led "Save the Last Word for Me" discussion to analyze Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea. The students shared in groups their analysis of important passages they chose from the novella then posted to a class chat-room their most significant ideas for all of their classmates to see. In a "Save the Last Word for Me" discussion, a student reads the passage he or she chose, then the rest of the group members discuss why they feel the passage is important. The student who chose the passage explains his or her analysis last, therefore getting "the last word." The Hemingway code hero, existentialism, brotherhood with nature, the modern tragic hero, and Christian symbolism were just a few of the ideas discussed by the students.
