Baldwin High School's Ava Weidensall earned a prestigious feature in the 20th Anniversary of City Theatre's Young Playwrights Festival. City Theatre showcased the playwriting talents of emerging young artists in the EQT Young Playwrights Festival from October 22 to November 2. In its twentieth year, the festival premiered six one-act plays and a reading of four honorable mentions which were written by middle and high school playwrights from Southwestern Pennsylvania. Directed by Spencer Whale, the plays were performed in two programs with an ensemble cast and professional design team.
Weidensall produced the piece while at Harrison Middle School. The play, entitled "Words," is the story of Miles King, an aspiring poet and advanced English Superstar whose world is disrupted when Brady Jennings, a former middle school bully, suddenly transfers into his class. A heartwarming tale of growth, "Words" explores the age-old question of whether people can truly change.
