In a powerful demonstration of student initiative and entrepreneurial spirit, Baldwin High School is preparing for the grand opening of The Highlander Hub, a new school store conceived and spearheaded entirely by BHS students. Set to open its doors this month, the Hub is more than just a retail space—it's a living laboratory for real-world business skills and a core component of the district’s "Journey of a Highlander" initiative.

The concept for The Highlander Hub originated last winter and was brought to life through the tireless efforts of its initiator and a six-person executive team: Nate Malock, Emma Mainarich, Kelcy Bhandari, Gianna Harkins, Riya Timsina, and Jewell Stevens.

The team has worked for months to transform their idea into a reality, tackling every challenge a new business faces, including securing funding from the Baldwin-Whitehall Educational Foundation, figuring out logistics, enlisting and training staff, and explaining their vision to stakeholders.

The store, which will be open during the academic resource time, after school, and at select indoor sporting events, will offer BWSD spirit wear.

The process of building the Hub has provided the executive team—and will provide the 80 student-employees—with fundamental leadership and business skills that are directly transferable to future careers.

For the first year or two, all proceeds from The Highlander Hub will be reinvested directly into the store to ensure its long-term sustainability. Once the operation is financially on its feet, the proceeds will support StuCo and school-wide initiatives.

To secure the Hub’s legacy and expand its educational reach, the four faculty sponsors—Chris Reilsono, Rich Deemer, and Francesca Cappetta, with administrator Mrs. Denise Wells—are developing a new course called Retail Management.

This elective will allow students to gain hands-on experience by focusing on the behind-the-scenes aspects of the business, such as designing and manufacturing products, while STUCO members continue to manage the in-store operations.

The Highlander Hub will hold its open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony in January 2026.
