The Plant Kingdom Is Growing at HMS

Environmental Educational Specialist Mr. Shane Miller brought Raccoon Creek State Park to the sixth-grade science classes. The high-interest plant presentation included historical usage, unique food sources, and medical uses of certain specimens. He seamlessly transitioned to tree anatomy and how to identified events during a tree's life. Utilizing multiple samples of tree trunk cuttings and images, students learn how to identify and interpret wildfire damage, insect infestation, and limb loss. Mr. Miller fielded many student questions as well as identified samples from around their residences. Plant life passion grew in the students through this visit!
