Connecting the Dots

The fourth-grade students of R. A. Lutz Elementary recently joined thousands of other children across the globe to participate in International Dot Day.  Starting in 2009, a group of educators began celebrating this date. Peter H. Reynold's book, The Dot encourages creativity, self-expression, confidence, and bravery through its main character, Vashi. Even if it begins with a dot, all children are capable of creating beautiful art. This journey of self-discovery is an inspiration to all readers.

The fourth-graders enjoyed a reading of the book The Dot, became more acquainted with the author and his mission, and created their own "framed" artwork beginning with a simple dot. In addition, the students created a "promise dot" explaining how they will encourage others to try something new and difficult. The colorful dots adorn the new community room's bulletin boards.
