Forces and motion are around us every day and impact everything we do! The students in Rooms 138 & 139 at R. A. Lutz Elementary School are experiencing this first hand as they work through our Forces and Motion unit in Science. By actively participating in these experiments, students are developing critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a deeper understanding of the principles governing the physical world around them.
The students completed a wide variety of experiments to explore these fundamental concepts of physics. Some of these activities included ramp and ball tests, paper airplane designs, pendulum investigations, and friction explorations. Through these experiments, the students observed and manipulated variables to understand the relationships between force, mass, acceleration, and motion. They learn about Newton's Laws of Motion, the effects of friction, the principles of aerodynamics, and the behavior of objects under different conditions. No matter which lab they worked on, all the students had so much fun while learning these key Science concepts!!
Additionally, the students have explored the real-life phenomena of forces and motion by studying the Golden Knights as they sky-dove from an airplane and the Black Widow ride at Kennywood as it takes its riders on a thrilling trip back and forth like a pendulum!!
Understanding the world around them and the forces and motion at work in their lives has enriched these students’ knowledge and created a wealth of experiences to carry with them through fourth, fifth grade, and beyond!
