Students Explore Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Since October is AAC Awareness Month, the LES Speech Therapists shared a presentation with some of our fourth-grade classrooms to teach them about how students in our very own school use AAC to communicate.  For those who may not know, AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication.  Some ways that people use AAC to communicate include: paper and pencil/pen, gestures, picture boards, or speech generating devices.  Since several of our students at LES use iPads with communication applications to speak the words they are trying to say out loud, we focused on this type of AAC.

The students talked about different ways people communicate.  They listened to a story about how a boy communicates using an AAC device.  And they were even able to play a game of “I Spy” using an AAC device.  All of the students learned that they have to be patient when talking with someone using AAC because they quickly realized it can take a bit longer than just blurting out a word in an instant!
