Halloween Solids & Liquids Investigation: Candy Corn Melting Races

Ultimate learners in Ms. Ussia' s first grade class at McAnnulty recently investigated how solids and liquids interacted by experimenting with various liquids and Halloween candy.

Learners applied steps of the scientific method they learned in Life Studies class to make a prediction and create a hypothesis they could test.

They recorded a sentence about which liquid they thought could dissolve their candy corn the fastest in a melting race! Liquids such as water, saltwater, and vinegar were used. Learners carefully used their senses and observed properties of these liquids. The properties of transparent and translucent were the favorites.

Learners worked collaboratively as scientists to perform all of the steps involved in the process of the scientific method. Observing how the solid and liquids changed as they dissolved was very interesting. Vinegar was the winner of the race! Experimenting, sharing, observing, and recording the melting reactions of candy corn with many liquids was a sweet success! Get a glimpse of the fun here.
