Old MacDonald Had A Farm…in Kindergarten

The song “Old Macdonald” can be heard all over McAnnulty as kindergarten students have been learning tractor loads about farms! Students have been studying farm animals including the pig, cow, sheep, and chicken. We have learned about their lifestyle, diet, and role on the farm. We have also learned about what animals produce for human use. Students have learned about the seasons of a farmer's job and about crops that they grow and produce. Many classes got to participate in a virtual field trip with the Zahncroft Dairy farm. During the field trip, students got to learn about how the dairy farm was run and more information about cows themselves. We got to see baby calves, grown sows, and even a cow being milked. We were walked through the whole milking process and even learned what happens to the milk after the milking process is complete! Students at McAnnulty will also be participating in an in house field trip next week. During this field trip we will be able to get up close to real live animals and even pet them! We can’t wait to see some of the animals we have been learning about.

The farm unit has been so much fun and students have been doing a fabulous job using the specific vocabulary we have learned. During a culminating project in Mrs.Moore's class, students each wrote three clues about their favorite farm animal. Students practiced making inferences by using clues given by their peers to guess the animal! It was great to see students practicing their writing and working on using a complete sentence.
