Martin Luther King Jr. embodied the American ideals of hope, freedom, and justice. He was born and raised in a nation where he did not yet enjoy the same rights and freedoms as others due to the color of his skin, but he peacefully and successfully campaigned for those laws to change.
He continually spoke out about injustice and advocated for systemic reform. Through his sermons, speeches, letters, and actions, he taught Americans from all walks of life that we have more in common than we realize, and that working together is what empowers us to create a better future for all.
Maybe most importantly, he encouraged us to not only dream of a better future where our values and our ideals actually match our laws and our lived experiences, but he also encouraged people to go beyond dreaming and take the necessary action to make those dreams a reality.
When we celebrate MLK Day, what we’re really celebrating is the power of one person to improve the lives of millions. Martin Luther King, Jr., believed that each of us can make the world a better place, not just for ourselves but also for our communities. Through his words and actions, he continues to serve as an inspiration for everyone who can envision a better future and a motivation for each of us to keep doing the hard but necessary work that will bring that better future to life.
