Earlier this year, the Baldwin-Whitehall School District introduced a new youth mascot: Scottie the Brave. This youth mascot comes alongside the Fighting Highlander, who will remain the District-wide traditional mascot as a lovable addition for our youngest learners. The District hosted a naming contest over the summer for students in grades K-5 with multiple winners, showing that great minds think alike!
“We wanted to empower our students to think about how school culture is created and take an active role in it. Programs like this promote social and emotional learning and a sense of belonging. That in turn enhances academic achievement,” shares Dr. Randal Lutz, Superintendent of Schools.
The students who submitted the winning name were invited to a reception with Dr. Lutz and Dr. Janeen Peretin, Assistant to the Superintendent for BWSD. Each student was presented with a plush Scottie the Brave, complete with an adoption certificate memorializing their role in this new lovable youth mascot for the district.
"Scottie the Brave is a project that’s near and dear to my Highlander heart. Watching this mascot come to life in our elementary schools has been a heartwarming experience, as Scottie inspires our youngest learners to embrace bravery, kindness, and the Highlander Way every day," shares Peretin. Scottie is now a "pawsitive" part of the school culture!
