Fourth-grade students at Whitehall Elementary recently read a story about a little boy from Tanzania who was bullied and treated poorly because of his appearance. In this month of kindness they felt compelled to give back and make a difference. Students will be collecting spare change in a jar and at the end of each month will monitor their progress. When a collective goal of at least $250 is raised (the cost of one surgery in a developing country), they will send it to the nonprofit Smile Train. Students have been encouraged to look for loose change anywhere and everywhere: couch cushions, car cup holders, junk drawers, or by doing household chores. Whitehall Elementary is anxious for the students to see how just small change can add up to make a big change in someone else's life.
