The John J. Harvey fireboat came out of retirement to battle the flames from 9/11.
Second graders at Whitehall remembered 9/11 by learning about an unlikely hero, the John J. Harvey fireboat. The boat was commissioned in 1931 to serve the City of New York and New York Harbor and served for over 60 years before retiring in 1994. She came out of retirement on 9/11 to assist firefighters battling the blazes at the World Trade Center. Alongside two other pumping boats, the boat pumped for 80 hours until water mains came back online.
