Exciting things are happening at the Paynter Library Media Center! A new elementary science curriculum has been adopted this year and materials were purchased for students to use in library class. The library lessons support what is being done in science. In December, some students in grades 3–5 at Paynter came to the library media center to tinker with LittleBits, a system of electronic building blocks that snap together to turn ideas into inventions. Lessons were co-taught with Mrs. Mutschler, the library media specialist, and classroom teachers. Students discovered how the materials worked and even invented a prototype of an invention that could be used in the real world!
These co-teaching lessons were done in conjunction with the grant Paynter received to update our library media center. The grant is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) Catalyst Grant funded by the Grable and Hillman Foundations. Look for more innovative things to come from here in the near future!
